Chapter 46
Chapter 46
“It’s alright. I’ll try to manage the time,” Howard reassured her.
Feeling a lump of nerves in her throat, Gwendolyn blurted out, “Mr. Chadwick, I’ve got an idea.”
“What is…?” Before he could finish, he felt the warmth of her lips pressing awkwardly against his own. Her kiss was green and rushed, like a startled fawn, and it caught him off guard.
It was more of a clumsy nuzzle than a kiss.
“Gwendolyn, that’s not quite how it’s done. Let me show you,” he said, his voice muffled between gentle kisses. His hands cradled her neck in a dance of tender intimacy.
It was addictive.
He couldn’t tell if it was just a stopgap measure or if there was a devilish urge in his own heart.
The charged atmosphere felt as though they could tear off their clothes and have sex for three hundred rounds then and there.
“Hmph.” Waldo snorted disdainfully.
“This woman sure had a way of ensnaring rich guys.” he thought. “She was probably worried that Howard would abandon her once his legs healed. Poor thing miscalculated. Howard was on his deathbed.”
“My apologies, Dr. Waldo,” Howard released the flushed Gwendolyn, speaking with composed indifference, “Newlyweds, you know, I can hardly keep my hands off each other.”
“Mr. Howard, as you please.” said Waldo. Even with his injury, Howard was restless.
“I’ll have Marina show you out.”
“No need, I know my way.” Waldo, carrying his medical bag, headed out the door. Soaking in poisonous medicinal baths and indulging in lust was a surefire way to an early grave.
Why should he prevent Howard from hastening his own end?
As the door closed behind Waldo, Howard turned to Gwendolyn, “Dr. Gwen..your idea sure worked wonders.”
“Come on out now.” Gwendolyn helped him out and laid him on the bed.
She wrung a clean towel and began to wipe his body in silence, removing the toxic residue from his broad back.
Then, as she moved to his chest, her fingers accidentally brushed against his muscles.
The air was thick with tension, Howard’s smile fading as memories surfaced. It was just like her first day here, waking him with her tender care.
“I’ll take care of the rest.”
He gripped her wrist firmly, looking into her tearful, earnest eyes.
“Alright, I’ll prepare the acupuncture needles.” She took out her precious gold needles and sterilized them with alcohol before inserting them, one by one, into Howard’s healing points.
Gwendolyn’s hands were steady, but with each needle, her heart ached a little more. A teardrop fell, landing on Howard’s skin. It was like a scald on his heart.
“Why the tears out of the blue?” asked Howard.
Gwendolyn hastily cleaned her tears, shaking her head. NôvelDrama.Org owns © this.
“I’m just so angry. Doctors are supposed to heal, not harm. Because of him, you…”
“So you’re crying over that.” Howard watched Gwendolyn silently, his usual stern gaze melting into a tender warmth that enveloped them both.
“Mr. Chadwick, why don’t good people get their rewards?” Howard was suffering, her
grandmother had suffered, and yet Gemma and Bainbridge thrived.
Her eyelashes, wet and curled, framed her eyes, making them all the more radiant and arresting as they shimmered with tears.
Howard chuckled indulgently. “Gwendolyn, you are my reward.”
He reached out, his fingertips brushing away her tears, “Being so soft–hearted, you’ll get trampled on one day.”
Gwendolyn gazed back at him, feeling a warmth in her heart. She could sense the unabashed affection, the silent understanding of lovers, the longing, and the palpitations.
Just as she was about to speak, a commotion erupted outside their door.
