Chapter 39
Chapter 39
39 Rogue Plus Two
Unknown POV
I wrap my arms around my mother and daughter as the warriors drag us to the cells. I wish we had never rested near this f**king pack. We had been running for the last few hours and I knew Penny would need to rest. I cannot let those ba**ards find us. I refuse to be his personal breeder. I still don’t understand why he wants me so desperately when many of the other rogue she-wolves would be willing to do his bidding. There is no way he could ever know about my gift because I have never told anyone what I can do. My mother is the only one who knows about my abilities and she would never tell anyone. Once we walk down stairs, Penny starts to cry and I pick her up, holding her close to my chest. “Mama it’s dark in here” she says in her tiny voice. She is just about three years old and she is the sweetest little girl. I hate that she is mixed up in all of this and I will die before I let these wolves hurt my pup. The warrior opens the door to the cell and ushers us inside. Thankfully, he isn’t cruel to us and when he locks the cell, he says nothing. I notice we are not alone down here. The cell next to us has a few wolves who definitely smell of pack. One looks severely injured and the others look worried.
The men look toward us and my mother grabs my arm. “Don’t even think about speaking to them or using your gift.” “If they put their own pack down here, imagine what they must have done.” I love my mother, she is very protective of me and Penny. We are the only family she has left. She wasn’t honest with the Alpha, but he would never have believed us if he knew we were from a collective. We aren’t here spying for the collective. That part was true, but he didn’t seem like the most reasonable Alpha to explain the real reason we ran. A few minutes later, we hear the door lock and we are all alone with no guards. “Are you alright” one of the men ask in our direction. He is young and his question seems of genuine concern. “Don’t you answer them.” “They don’t care about us, you know how pack wolves feel about rogues”, my mother whispers. “Mom, we are in no position to be judging these pack wolves.” “Maybe if we help their friend, they will help us.” She looks past me “they are in the same position weConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
are so just stay quiet and think about how we can get out of this wretched cell” she says. I hear a moan and turn to see the man spitting up blood.
“Mama he’s got a boo boo” Penny says with fear on her face. I bend down “would you like mama to fix his boo boo little one.” The smile that spreads across her face warms my heart as it always does. I stand and walk toward the cell, stopping a few feet from where the man who spoke, is standing. “We are alright. besides being locked in here but your friend looks like he isn’t.” “What’s your name” I ask him. “Jacob ma’am and these men are my fellow warriors and friends.” “Jacob I can help your friend.” He looks at me with confusion written all over his face. “Maureen please” my mother pleads with me not too but I can’t just watch this man die if I can help him. “Can you bring him closer to me.” The men pick him up and lay him down so I can reach through the bars. I look back to ensure there is no guards to see what I’m about to do and there isn’t. I reach my hand through the bars, placing it over the wound. The glow begins and the energy flows from my hand into the man. After a few seconds, I pull my hand back and step near Penny. She puts her arms out to me and I pick her up. “Mama, is he better?” “Yes, little one he is.”
The men help him to the cot in the cell. He looks over and he smiles “thank you for saving me.” I nod and we take a seat on the cot with my mother. I know she is upset with me for showing these men what I’m capable of, but she will get over being mad. A few minutes later, I hear the door open and three men walk down the stairs. They come to stand in front of the cell the men are in and we stay quiet. Penny lays her head on my chest and we just listen to the conversation.
Walker POV
As the men carry me to the cells, I know I am losing blood too fast. I can feel myself fading. “Walker, you need to hold on, I’m trying to heal you” Rowan is growling at me. “That ba**ard is everything Amelia said he is and he needs to be stopped.” I can’t even respond. I feel so weak. I close my eyes and pray that this isn’t the end. Jacob is putting pressure on the wound and I’m glad I was able to stop Atlas from doing this to him. I am not old by any means, but Jacob is only nineteen. I have had thirty-
five years of this life and if that’s all the goddess sees fit to give me, then so be it. “Stop talking like that and fight to stay alive” Rowan says. “It is not our time, we still have more to do.” I want to believe he is right, but in this moment, it really doesn’t feel like it.
I can hear voices all around me. Some are familiar and some I’ve never heard before. I feel myself being lifted and placed on the cold hard floor of the cell. I can’t even open my eyes to see what’s happening. A few seconds later, my whole body feels warm and my connection to Rowan feels strong again. “Rowan, what’s happening?” “I believe the goddess has sent someone to save us.” If I could I would roll my eyes at him. The goddess has bigger things to worry about than saving us. I’m finally able to flutter my eyes open and the men help me to the cot. I look in the cell next to ours and at that moment, I know this woman is the reason I’m alive right now. I smile and thank her for saving my life. A few seconds later, three of our fellow warriors come to stand in front of the cell. There is silence before he takes the keys from his pocket, unlocking the cell door. Jacob and the others step in front of me and I love that they are so loyal as to defend me even after everything that has happened. The warriors step aside and I think we are all confused. Tristian looks at me with sympathy in his eyes. “Walker, take these men and leave before we are given orders.” “No warrior will stop you.” I make it to my feet feeling much better than I did just minutes ago.
Jacob and the others help me and we head out of the cell. I stop and turn back, looking at these women who are the only reason I’m alive. I put my hand out to Tristian and I can see he is torn, but after a few seconds he sets the keys in my hand. I free myself from my friends and walk to the cell unlocking it. “Ladies let’s go.” The woman who healed me smiles and they all head out standing next to Jacob. I hand the key to Tristan, taking his hand. “I promise you this won’t be forgotten.” He nods and we head out the back door of the cells. I manage to move on my own two feet but I notice Jacob keeps checking on me. “Jacob, I’m fine just move your a**.” Tristan was truthful when he said no warrior would stop us. We don’t even see one warrior as we head for the border. Once were at safe distance from the pack we stop for a moment. The woman walks up to me and sticks out her hand. I take it
“thank you for helping us get out of the cells.” “What is your name” I ask her. “My name is Maureen.” “Thank you, Maureen again, for saving me.”
Maureen POV
I was shocked when the warriors opened the cell for the men to leave. I’m not sure what is happening. I thought for a second they were going to leave and we would still be stuck waiting for that ba**ard Alpha to decide our fate. I was waiting to hear, I told you so from my mother, but thankfully, he is a wolf of honor. Once we cross the border, I feel like I can breathe easier. “Thank you for saving us and we wish you luck” I say to the man. I turn taking Penny’s hand and we walk about four steps before he says my name. I turn back and he smiles. “Maureen, I have no idea how you ended up in the cells but we would like you to travel with us.” My mother squeezes my arm and I know she wants to leave and get away from these men. Something in me feels that we can trust them. “I promise we will take you all to a pack that is safe until we can figure out how to help you.” “What makes you think we need help” I say a little defensive. “Maybe we were just traveling and that stupid Alpha kidnaped us.” “I meant no disrespect Maureen, we just want to help you I swear.” I look down at Penny and she is shaking her head with a huge smile. I hear my mother sigh because she already knows my decision. She speaks to the men for the first time, “if you hurt my girls in anyway, you will know what it means when they say don’t mess with a mama wolf.” “Yes ma’am”, they say in unison.
“I promise you ma’am we will keep you safe.” “Don’t call me ma’am, my name is Judith and this is Penny.” He reaches out his hand shaking my mother’s first and then Penny’s. She giggles and I take her hand. We follow them and I pray to the goddess this is the right thing to do. We all shift and Penny climbs on Clarice. We run until we reach a patrol gate. The pack looks huge as we can see it from the gate. There are many cottages and one huge pack house. “State your business at the Nightfire pack.” “We are here to see Alpha Lincoln.” “Please let him know that Walker and the warriors have returned.” “What about these rogues” the guard says with disdain. “Be very careful or I will be sure to tell your Alpha how you treat guests.” I smile as the guard starts to sputter. A few seconds later, he opens the
gate and we follow the men to the pack house. I squeeze Penny’s hand a little tighter as I pray one last time that this wasn’t a mistake.
