37 Shadows of the Past
In the dimly lit corner of their favorite lounge, Jada sat flushed with embarrassment, her friends‘ teasing
about her crush on Mr. Carson reaching new heights. “That’s it, I’m done with your mockery! I’ll enjoy
my solitude with my own drink,” she declared with dramatic flair, though her eyes betrayed no intention
of leaving.
Emma, still chuckling, leaned closer. “Come on, Jada. It’s all in good fun. We know you’ve got a soft
spot for him, but that’s what makes it so adorable.”
Jada sighed, her defenses waning under Emma’s sympathetic gaze. “It’s just… I don’t know how to
handle these feelings. It’s not like I chose to fall for him,” she confessed, a vulnerability in her voice that
Emma seldom heard.
“I know, and that’s perfectly okay. Feelings are messy, but they’re also what make us human,” Emma
reassured her, offering a comforting smile.
Their conversation paused as the waiter brought another round of drinks. Emma’s attention
momentarily drifted to the window, where she caught sight of Nathan. She turned away abruptly, an
uncomfortable tension in her posture.
Seeing her discomfort, Morgan leaned in. “Everything alright? You seem bothered by that guy.”
Emma’s eyes flickered with unease. “It’s Nathan. We have history, but… let’s just say it didn’t end well.”
Morgan nodded, understanding the complexities of past relationships. “You don’t owe him anything,
Emma. Your feelings and comfort come first.” Jada excused herself to use the ladies‘.
Outside, Nathan, feeling snubbed by Emma’s cold shoulder, decided to take matters into his own.
hands. He took out his iPhone and quickly snapped some pictures of Emma and the ‘man‘ she was
with, hoping to stir up some drama.
Back inside, Emma noticed the flash from Nathan’s camera. “Did you see that? Someone just took our
photos,” she said, a hint of concern in her voice.
Morgan immediately stood up, protective instincts kicking in. “Stay here. I’ll check it out.” She returned
shortly, finding no one. “Whoever it was, they’re gone now. But we won’t let them spoil our night.”
Unaware of the brewing storm, Jada returned to the table and tried to lighten the mood. “Hey, let’s
forget about all that and just enjoy our time together, okay?”
The night carried on with laughter and heartfelt conversations, but as they prepared to leave, Alex
unexpectedly appeared, his face contorted with anger. RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
Emma, taken aback, faced him squarely. “What do you want, Alex? What are you doing here?”

“I saw the pictures, Emma. Who’s that guy? Were you cheating on me all along?” Alex’s voice was
tinged with betrayal and confusion.
Emma’s response was calm but firm. “Alex, we’re divorced. My life is none of your concern. You need
to let go.”
Alex, struggling to process this new reality, grappled with his emotions. “But Emma, I can’t just… How
can you move on so quickly?”
Emma looked at him, her eyes conveying a mix of pity and resolve. “Moving on isn’t a choice, Alex. It’s
a necessity. For both of us, and for our own good!”
With those final words, Emma turned away, leaving Alex in the shadows of his own unresolved
feelings.
