Chapter 1404 I Do Not Understand You
Josie was actually surprised that Dexter managed to get himself out of trouble through such connections.
It was too convoluted, too rough, and too risky.
She murmured, "Selena was just a mistress. How did you use that to your advantage?"
"When she left back then, she was already three months pregnant. Only I and Ms. Marilyn knew about it. That's why I hinted to you to go find her."
No wonder Salazar spoke up. It was all because of the child.
Josie was too tense. Dexter tried to relax her by gently embracing her and patting her head. "You're smart enough to understand my hint."
"Ms. Marilyn didn't remember because of me."
"Ms. Marilyn has aged. Her memory isn't what it used to be, so she naturally couldn't recall as sharply as you. I sent someone to find Justin, and only after Justin reminded her, was she able to locate where Selena is currently living. Preston also deserves some credit for this."
Josie was still tense, shivering uncontrollably. She wasn't sure if it was due to the extreme cold or something else.
"I begged Morgan, and he also provided you with evidence to clear your name. Why didn't you use it? Why go through all this trouble?"
His voice was muffled, filled with sadness.Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.
Dexter increased his intensity, "People like Morgan, once you accept something from them, they'll have you under their control for life. I believe you must have paid a significant price to get him to help me, right?"
His words hit home. Sometimes, Josie admired his ability to judge people.
She looked up. "It was difficult indeed, but I went to great lengths to obtain those things for you. It seems you don't appreciate my efforts."
"I don't want you to be controlled by him."
"How do you know I won't mind being controlled by him for your sake?" she blurted out.
Dexter's figure swayed slightly, seemingly taken aback.
"I'm sad because you didn't accept my intentions. You still don't tell me anything and make decisions on your own."
The man sensed her sorrow and remained silent for a long time. "Salazar has an illegitimate child he doesn't want others to know about who is seriously ill and can't return to the country. I used Selena's child to threaten him, so he kept people watching me. With her by my side, I had the upper hand. During this time, I couldn't contact you."
"So why are you able to come now?" Josie pushed him away, feeling a bit exhausted. It's only because I caught you red-handed. You had no choice but to take the risk and come to the Olsen Residence to tell me all this. If I hadn't caught you, when
were you planning to tell me?"
Dexter stood still, his expression showing incomprehension. "Isn't my current risk-taking worth mentioning? I thought you understood me."
"I don't understand you, Dexter,"
Josie quickly responded. "I never
have. Even if you couldn't show up in person, couldn't you send someone to inform me? Can't you do that? I heard about Selena from Juliette, not from you."
She shook her head. "Does it matter that I've been running around, planning for you?"
She had wanted to say, "Am I important to you?" But she didn't want to humiliate herself.
"If it's not important, then I wouldn't have refused Morgan's evidence and gone through all this trouble to find Selena!"
Dexter couldn't come to terms with it. She felt unimportant, yet deep down she knew, over the years, she was the only one who truly mattered.
"That's because Selena can control Salazar more effectively!" Josie looked at him, speaking quickly.
Dexter was taken aback once again. For a long while, the two of them locked eyes, neither uttering a word.
He said softly, "So, that's what you think of me."
"Always weighing the pros and cons, that's just who you are."
