Chapter 1631
Ben casually handed Jamie the keys, his tone light. "I have no use for it."
Though it sounded nonchalant, it was true.
Jamie hesitated for a moment before accepting the keys. Having a car of her own wasn't a bad idea. It would make it easier to get Charlie to and from school without always relying on Ben for transportation. "Well, since you won, the Gem Harbor project is yours now," Tim announced unexpectedly.
The surprise left Jamie stunned, while Ben remained composed, as if he had anticipated this outcome. He exchanged a few polite words with Tim and then led Jamie back to the car.
On the drive, Jamie couldn't help but ask, "Did you know this would happen?"
"Know what? That Tim's event was a cover for vetting partners? If not for that, do you think he'd bother hosting a party just to play games?" Ben's calm gaze flicked toward her, his tone matter-of-fact.
His air of confidence made it seem as though everything had unfolded exactly as he planned. Jamie nodded, falling silent as she stared out the window.
Her thoughts wandered. It was clear now why Ben was so adept at navigating these situations. No wonder his father had been so determined to keep him at the company.
The trip, initially scheduled for three days, was wrapped up in just one, leaving Jamie to assume they would be heading home early. But then she learned Ben had reserved the hotel's private beach for the day.
The hotel manager's cheerful invitation downstairs left her dumbfounded. "Someone has requested your presence on the beach, Miss Lewis. Mr. Lucas has made all the arrangements and is waiting for you." Ben went all out again?
Jamie couldn't ignore the manager's knowing smile and felt her face heat up, her discomfort palpable. But she complied, changing into something appropriate before heading down.novelbin
As soon as she stepped outside, the
vast beauty of the ocean stretched before her leaving her momentarily speechless. The sound of waves crashing onto the shore, the sight of seagulls gliding across the sky-it was all surreal.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Ben's voice came from beside her.
Without thinking, Jamie replied, "It is."
Realizing this was something he had prepared specifically for her, her cheeks warmed further when she met his deep gaze.
Embarrassed, she quickly looked away. "The work is done. Shouldn't we head back? With both you and Noah away, who's watching the company?"
Ben's gaze dimmed slightly at her words, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "There's always someone to keep an eye on things."
It was true. His father cared too
much about the Lu Corporation to ever leave it unattended, even when the senior management was away on business. Even while ill, he would never relinquish control, just as he had never fully trusted Ben.
Realizing she had touched a nerve, Jamie lowered her eyes, regret weighing heavy on her heart. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up."
Her voice was soft, filled with remorse, but the tension in the air lingered.
Ben didn't respond immediately. He simply shoved his hands in his pockets and stared out at the ocean, watching the carefree seagulls above.
They eventually settled on the beach chairs by the shore. The weather was perfect. It was not too hot, with a pleasant breeze carrying the salty scent of the sea.
Jamie sipped her chilled watermelon
juice and leaned back, letting herself relax in the rare moment of peace. It felt like ages since she had time to herself like this.
Not that she didn't enjoy her time with Charlie but it was just different. Being a parent often meant sacrificing personal space and freedom, especially for a mother.
