X&J EMPIRE, NEW YORK. “I can’t believe this. So, M&M Foods is all yours now?” Jace asked for the umpteenth time. Xander laughed amidst the celebration going on in the lobby. “Yes, Jace. X&J foods will only get bigger and better from here on.” “Nina must be so happy.” “I am sure she is.” He mused while staring at her sweetly among the crowd. “That reminds me, Dawn should be here to celebrate with us. Where is she?” Jace shifted on his legs; Xander hadn’t checked his mail. “She must have informed someone of her absence.” “That is strange,” Xander said, checking his phone for any message she must have dropped. “Why not check your mail?” “Mail? Dawn hardly uses her mail unless it is for work. But then, let me check.” His brows furrowed when he indeed found a message from Dawn. It happened to be a resignation letter. “Take a look, Jace. She resigned. How am I just getting to know about this now? We still spoke a while back, and she didn’t mention anything like it. What is going on?” “I-I don’t know. Dawn probably got tired of seeking your affection.” “What does that have to do with work? Whatever we share has never been in the way of work. At least for the sake of our friendship, she should have informed me of the reason. I will have to visit her today.” “No, you won’t!” Jace blurted hastily. Xander raised a questioning brow. “Why? Is there something you know that I don’t?” He groaned inwardly. “Promise you won’t lose your temper if I tell you.” “Tell it to me first.” “You still haven’t promised.” “Fine! I promise.” “Okay, I made her resign.” “Why? Jace, why would you do such a thing?” Jace sighed and brought out his phone to show him what Dawn had been up to lately. When Xander was still confused, he played the recordings for him. Xander gulped hard; Jace winced inwardly at the flash of pain in his brother’s eyes. “She was going to do this?” He asked with shaky breaths. “I am sorry, man. It was why I didn’t want to tell you.” Xander handed back the phone, feeling his heart pound roughly. “W…why would she go to such extreme length? To get back at me?” “No, she is just crazy. It is clear that Dawn is obsessed with you and would go to any length to keep you grounded. I just had to threaten her to stay away from you with the promise of not exposing her secret to you while also handing her over to the police.” He scoffed. “Dawn still wants to be on my good side after all this? I am never going to allow it! How did you get to know?” “Minny. She also thinks her sister was going out of control and someone has to end the nonsense.” “Is this what you are hiding from Tania? Your relationship is a wreck because of me.” Jace slapped his arm playfully. “Come on, Xan. You come first before anyone else. Until you are ready to show the world, I will guard you fiercely, even if it costs me the woman my heart desires.” He said with a dry chuckle. Xander sniffed back the tears that formed in his eyes. “I don’t deserve you, Jace. Thank you, man. I need a moment.” He thinned his lips and walked away. Jace wanted to go after him but thought otherwise. He didn’t get to change his mind as some ladies whisked him away from the spot. Xander stepped into his office and leaned against the door, feeling like his insides would explode. He feels heartbroken and blames himself. Despite everything he had done for Dawn, she had to play on his intelligence. If Dawn already knows something, it won’t take long before everything gets pieced together. And no one will want anything to do with him. All of the happiness he felt earlier went with the wind. He dragged himself to his chair and sat on it, facing the glass wall that oversees the busy city of New York. His uncle and brother’s warning seemed to be coming alive. Shutting his eyes tightly, he tried to keep his thoughts together. “I knew you would be here,” Nina said excitedly, her breath fanning his face. Xander opened his eyes to see her face so close to his. He had been lost in thought and didn’t know when she walked in. “Hey, you.” He murmured. Nina kissed his lips lightly and went on to sit on his lap with her arms wrapped around his neck. “Wow, are you sure you don’t mind?” “Hmmn, hmmm.” She replied, shaking her head. “I am feeling on top of the world because of you. I had to spend some time alone in the toilet to cry. Everything overwhelmed me, and I couldn’t help but let it all out. But when I stepped out to the lobby, I saw everyone congratulating me and expressing how impressed they were. I choose to live in the moment. And now I know you are why I even have this moment.” “No, mama. Your hard work brought you here. And I thought you were angry at me. Here you are trying to seduce me.” He joked. Her face flushed shyly. “Do you have to gloat?” “I can’t help it.” He grinned. “Thank you, baby. It means so much to me. I was so glad to see the sadness on all their faces. Andrea especially would be hoping it’s all a nightmare. I promise to make X&J foods the best; thank you for trusting me.” He held her waist. “I knew you could do it. I have no doubts. Thankfully, everyone else agrees with me. Do whatever you please with the company; it’s yours to handle.” She giggled, rubbing her nose against his. Nina stopped all of a sudden and frowned. “Do you not want me anymore?” “Why would you say such a thing? I want you like I desire to breathe.” Xander tried to smile, tucking her hair behind her ears. “So why won’t you make love to me?” She exclaimed.

“My love, it’s not-”

“I know I said I was skeptical about my feelings at first. But now I know I want you more than anything, and this has nothing to do with you making me CEO. I want you so bad, Xan.” She leaned in to kiss the top of his nose. Xander gulped with difficulty; the pain in her eyes made him feel disappointed in himself. “Baby, I want you just the same. It’s just-” She didn’t let him finish and locked lips with him. Dawn opened the door and whimpered at the sight before her, even though she wasn’t sure who the lady was. Nina raised her head at the intrusion, clearing her throat when she realized it was Dawn. “What is it?” Xander asked, unaware since his back had turned to the door. Nina got off his lap. “You have a guest. I will see you at home?” She asked hopefully. Xander laughed shyly. “Alright, mama. Whatever you want.” “Okay, bye.” She giggled, kissing him quickly before hurrying out. Dawn knew that was intentional on Nina’s part. She fumed inside but couldn’t show it. Instead, she maintained a calm expression and smiled while moving close to the table. “Hey, I am surprised you didn’t try to call me. Did you get my mail?” The sweetness Nina had impacted into Xander seemed to melt away at the sight of Dawn. He frowned and hummed in response. “I just came to get my things. I feel like it would be nice to have a change of environment. I want my friend back; I hope we can put everything behind us. You don’t have to worry about me getting a job; you know I am brilliant.” She laughed nervously. Xander snorted at how pretentious she appeared. “You have a lot of nerve showing up in front of me, Dawn.” “W…what do you mean?” “Stop with the facade. Jace already told me. I can’t believe you would be this desperate. Aren’t you ashamed? What did I ever do to deserve this from you, Dawn? You claim to care about me, yet my happiness and desire mean nothing to you.” Dawn’s lips quivered, and the disappointing stare in Xander’s eyes made her heartbreak. She should have known Jace would never keep her secret. He hates her too much to be that thoughtful towards her. Throwing caution to the wind, she fell on her knees. “I am so sorry, Xander. Forgive me. I do not know what came over me. I promise you it will never happen again. Pardon me this one time, please.” “Pardon you? For what exactly? You are a dangerous person to walk with. So, if I had a part of me frozen away, would you have taken it without my permission and made me responsible for something I knew nothing about? Is that how bad you want to see me sad and broken? I have told you who my heart belongs to countless times, but I don’t remember you listening. You know what? I have had enough of your nonsense. Please, leave and never come back. Forget that we ever met. Drop everything that has to do with my company, and don’t even think of playing smart. If anything goes missing, you will have the police at your door that very day. Goodbye, Dawn. Let this be the last time you show your face before me.” “Xander, please. I promise to change for-” “Don’t make me repeat myself. I will humiliate you and have the security men throw you out. Leave!” She couldn’t talk to him any further. It would do her a lot of good to leave and not return. Her heart raced fearfully at his clenched fist. She was wiping off the tears that laced her eyes. Dawn did a walk of shame out of the office. Xander bites down hard on his lips, feeling filled with regret. The tears let themselves out like a fountain, and he cried like never before. He has just lost a bond that was dear to him. His situation wouldn’t let him have the woman he had long desired!
