“Lilian, you did what?” He questioned her. Their eyes widened revealing how angry he felt.

She couldn’t say a word. Her eyes only studied the humans in the sitting room. That’s just shit.

She was unaware that Xavier would be back so early. Uhmmm! He never let them know of being back so early, and it’s high time he returned by the time.

“I’ve done my best just to make sure you treat this child like yours, but all to no avail.” He bit his lips, shutting his eyes closed. “Tell me, Lilian, what is it that I haven’t done for you?”

Lilian twisted her lips, she glared at Vanessa and then at the children. She rubbed her hair with her left palm and then released a loud hiss within them.

Xavier watched her climb upstairs without giving a single answer to any of his questions. He turned to see his children all moody.

“Did she hurt?” He asked no one in particular.

Ben nodded. “She did.”

Xavier clutched his palms, he swallowed deeply just to let go of every annoying feeling within him. Biting his lips is one thing he doesn’t fail to do once in such a mood.

His eyes caught Vanessa as she enveloped Chloe in her arms. There wasn’t a single smile on her face.

“What did you get her doing, Vanessa?” He referred to the young lady.

Vanessa stretched her lips, but couldn’t put a smile on her face.

“Mr. Xavier, I’ll advise you to let everything go, just talk to her when in the mood. Honestly, I won’t bear it anymore seeing little Chloe under punishment without a reason.” She narrated.

Xavier nodded. “I promise to talk to her just like I’ve been doing, but please try to forgive all her ignorant acts.”

Chloe ran to him lifting her arms, he lifted her and left upstairs.

Ben and Tracy stood staring at Vanessa as she climbed the stairs too. They believed she was leaving for Chloe’s bedroom.

“I just thank God for this lady, she saved us.” Ben started getting seated on the sofa.

Tracy moved to him and got seated too. “You’re trying to believe that she’s kind of just doing this to gain our heart and attention.”

“Probably not what I think. Though Dad didn’t hesitate to arrive, who knows what she had planned to do with us?” Ben added, his two palms gripping his head.

She shook her head slightly. “Ummm! But I would have loved it if dad caught us kneeling, I just want him to throw that lady out for goodness sake. She’s a devil indeed.”

Ben hit her palm which she placed closer to him. “Let’s go upstairs and take a rest before preparing the dinner.”

He got on his feet and Tracy followed him immediately. They both left to their separate rooms.

Lilian sat on the bed with her legs crossed against each other. She only stared at the stoutly built man standing before her.

Would she say that it’s her first time studying his body? He wasn’t just handsome, but tall and huge to be feared.

Despite how angry he felt, he still has his handsome looks on.

Now he knows why his business partners call him the ‘fiercest’. The looks he has on when annoyed are so scary. But this time, she didn’t mind.

Those scary looks seemed sweet to her in all aspects.

“You aren’t giving me an answer again.” His scolding voice drew her out of her silly thoughts.

She licked her lips relaxing on the wall. “I did nothing to your children, they got me annoyed and I had to scold them.”

“They keep annoying you each time, and what’s their offense then?” He threw back to question her.

Lilian hissed. She wasn’t comfortable with the questions any longer. “I need to have a rest Xavier, why are you back so early?”

“I’ve taken much from you, Lilian. Don’t ever make the mistake of laying your hands on my children, because if it ever happens again… you won’t love my actions towards you.” He declared.

Lilian watched him leave the restroom, but she couldn’t utter a word.

“He doesn’t love me anymore. His children are using him as a tool towards me all because they don’t love me… But I won’t let everything go just that way, that children must surely pay if I lose their father…” She threatened within her.

In the evening.

Vanessa walked to the kitchen to get Tracy and Ben busy with the meal preparation. She peeped but they couldn’t notice her presence.

She thought of leaving but decided to call out for their attention.

“Hi kids. Do you need my help?” He distracted their discussion.

They two turned their heads back to get Nessa staring at them.

Tracy shook her head without a second thought. She has always been the one in charge of the meals and so it isn’t a big deal for her.

“You’re employed to babysit Chloe, not as a chef. Let me be, I can do everything myself.” Tracy stated without taking a glance at her.

She shuddered.

“Your help isn’t needed Miss Vanessa,” Ben added.

“It’s okay then.” The assuring words escaped her throat and she left the kitchen.

Tracy glanced at Ben and frowned at her face. “What does she want from us?”

“Maybe you will ask her some other time,” Ben responded immediately.

She hit his shoulder and grinned. “Silly boy, I’ll use your flesh to prepare this meal, and you know it’s gonna be so tasty.”

They both giggled.

After the meal was served in the dining room, Nessa came downstairs and took Chloe to her room.

The little girl had persisted in not coming to the dining, she had stated of not sighted Lilian throughout the day.

Xavier tried as much as he could to get what was wrong with Chloe, but Vanessa hid everything from him.

She doesn’t want to spoil his mood at the moment, because everything about Chloe worries him a lot.

Vanessa fed Chloe herself, showered her, and cuddled her to bed before leaving promising to be around very early in the morning.

She arrived very early in the morning as she promised and left to see Chloe still asleep. It baffled her because this was the first time she was still asleep at that time.

“Chloe, it’s time to get ready for school…” she called her out.

She lifted her into her arms and made her sit on her thighs. “What’s wrong with you? It’s everything okay?”

Chloe narrowed her eyes, staring at the lady who was so busy staring at her. “I’m very weak today, I don’t feel like going to school.”

“You don’t need to say that, this is the last day of school for this week. Try as much as you can.” She uttered while pulling off her nightwear.

She stretched her arm reluctantly and leaned on Vanessa’s chest.

“I’ll go to school if you will come to pick me up yourself.”

Vanessa let her lips agape. This little girl will always bring up one condition each time

“But you have a driver that does that, and you expect me to leave my bakery to pick you up from school.” She remarked trying not to reveal how shocked she was.

Chloe glanced at her face and sniffed. “Ok then, I’ll spend the whole day in your bakery once I’m back from school.”

She acceded to that condition rather. “Sure, I’ll get a special cupcake ready for you.”

A wide smile appeared on Chloe’s face on hearing that promise.

“Thank you so much, ma’am Vanessa.” Her arms wrapped around her chest.

She got down from her thigh and went straight to the bathroom to brush her teeth, while Nessa was getting her school clothes ready on the bed.

When she was through, she showered her and then began dressing her up for school.

Just like he did the last night, Vanessa got her breakfast into the room and fed her.

When the driver arrived, she led her out of the house and bid her farewell. She stood at the surroundings staring around but had nothing in mind at the moment.

It struck her mind to go get ready and leave for her bakery, but she turned backward and caught Xavier twitching towards her.

“You’re late to work today, Mr. Xavier.” She uttered, referring to the young man who revealed his white crystal teeth.

She returned the smile instantly.

“I have a conference meeting you attend this morning before leaving for my office, I’m in a hurry because I couldn’t wake up early…” he narrated.

Vanessa kept pouting her lips while he uttered.

“Sure you took your breakfast huh?”

He stood motionless releasing a deep breath through his nostrils. He glanced at Vanessa and bent his head low.

How is he gonna say this now? Will she grant him the favor when she does have issues with Lilian because of him?

“Uhmmm! I didn’t… and.” He paused, not knowing what to say again.

She smiled at the statement, it sounded silly to her.

“Really? You didn’t take anything before leaving? Trying to starve yourself today huh?” She asked serially.

Xavier licked his lips. “Would you help me with my meal in my company? I’ll appreciate it, please.”

“But I don’t know your company, and then your… .”

He shut her up instantly, he had known what she was about to utter.

“Just forget everything please, you can prepare the meal here. I’ll be in my office in three hours. Miss Vanessa, please do me this favor.” He pleaded politely.

Vanessa couldn’t say a word anymore, she only stiffened at place watching the man who is requesting a favor that should be granted by his fiancee.
