Heart of the Past

Amelia POV

The smell of the bleach was overwhelming. I scrunched my eyes at the bright light that was sipping through my closed eyelids. I felt powerless and heavy. I could not move my hands, my head, or my body. I could hear the low whispering of people in the room. I slowly started blinking, desperately trying to open my eyes to what’s around me.

“What’s is happening to her, get the doctor Sophia” I could hear the voice said.

Where am I? the blinking light slowly subsided, I could take a look around my surroundings. I was at the hospital.

I couldn’t remember how I got here but I know for sure that’s someone had bought me here. I whispered the first name that comes to my mouth. “Dylan”

“There she is doctor”

A doctor walked to me and began to check every part of my body, the eyes, tongue, head.

“She seems fine, no sign of amnesia. Her vitals and organs are in good shape.” the doctor announced to my mother and Sophia.

“When would she be discharged. Sophia asked the doctor.

“When she is fully recovered.” the doctor replied and walked out of the ward.

“It’s so good to see you alive again” Sophia commented

she hugged me and sobbed lightly.

I chuckled at her drama, it was not as if I died or something. “How long was I dead?”

“Three weeks” she replied sadly. I wonder why she sounded so sad. It is not as if I didn’t wake up.

“What’s going on? What’s are you not telling me?”I asked. She averted her eye from me and looked down. I looked at my mother who also did the same. “What’s going on? What’s are you not telling me?”

“Calm down Amelia, you just woke up. The doctor said we should wait before we break the news to you.”

“What’s news? Is it the baby?”I questioned, I knew my baby wasn’t going to survive that accident.

“How do you know?”Sophia asked as she sat beside me and pat me on the back.

“I know my baby wasn’t going to survive that’s fall. It was all Kelly, you have to arrest her. “I told them in case she was still walking freely.

“She is in prison. Anna found out about what she did and called the police on her”Sophia explained everything that happened in and I suddenly remembered about Dylan and Anna.

“Anna called the police on Kelly. I thought they were friends How about Dylan and Anna? “I didn’t know why I asked that question because I knew by now they should be on their honeymoon.

My mother cleared her throat and placed a hand on my legs. “Darling, don’t worry about that. You are awake and you need rest.”

I nodded and lay back on the bed. So Dylan doesn’t care about me, he didn’t even visit me and he actualized to Anna.

My baby was also gone. I placed a hand on my stomach and bit my lips to stop the tears that we’re sweetening to fall. I couldn’t cry in front of Sophia and mother her but I couldn’t control the tears. “Can you please let me rest for some minutes? my b? by’s death is a lot to take in and I want to be alone right now.” I know I shouldn’t be saying that to people that had to be beside me since I got into the accident but I just couldn’t control the tears.

“Okay baby We’ll be outside,” my mother said and walked out.

Sophia stood up from where she sat and placed a kiss on my forehead. “Call our names if you need anything,” she said and walked to the door. As she reached the door she stopped and said some words that bought a smile to my lips. “Dylan didn’t get married to Anna and he hasn’t been alright ever since he learned you got into an accident” she informed and walked out.

I held my stomach and cried at what she just said. Dylan didn’t get married but does that mean he cared and he only did that because I got into an accident. I cried for my baby. I cried because she/he didn’t get to come to this world. I didn’t get to hold my baby. If I hadn’t come out that day maybe, my baby would be alive. It’s all my fault but we can’t our fate or can we?

That evening, my room was filled with lots of people. My mother, Sophia, baby Lucas, Larry, Diana, and Tyler were all present in the room.

“it’s so nice to see you again Amelia. When I learned about your accident I almost died”Tyler said sarcastically and earned a slap on the back from Diana. “What’s a babe?? It the truth”

“Thank you for your concern Tyler” I smiled. Diana presents me roses and hugs me.

“I’m happy to know you are alright. Everyone in the office misses you including the boss. He is a mess” she whispered the last word so that I alone could hear.

I just smiled at her words and wondered where Dylan was. Didn’t he that I was awake? Is he still the annoying jerk till the end? I looked at the door for a sign of him and when I didn’t I smiled at the people present in the room to hide my sadness.

“Here, baby Lucas misses you. He has been crying for three weeks now” Larry joked.

“Cut the crap Larry, you know babies can’t talk”I replied him and rolled my eyes at him. He gave me baby Lucas and I carried him with care. “Oh my God, he is bigger” I commented at the size of the baby. “The last time I saw he was tiny”

“That’s babies for you, Amelia, they grow fast. I remember when you were tiny in my hand. Look at you now. “My mother commented.

“Oh no mum, don’t talk about the story of baby me” I laughed at her comment, I was trying hard to laugh but I don’t know if it was a laughter of sadness or joy. I stared at baby Lucas with awe and thought about how cool it could have been if I was holding my baby right now.

Sophia placed a hand on my shoulders and I knew she could read my expression. I gave her a smile stating that I was fine. we talked about few things that made me laughed and I knew they were trying to make me happy.

Someone knocked and we all turned to look at who knocked. My heart beat fast at the sight of the person at the entrance. He looks different, his beards had grown and it gave him a manly look although he looked like a mess.

“What’s the fuck are you doing here?”Larry’s angry voice broke me out of my imagination.

“I can explain, “Dylan said.

“I don’t care about your stupid explanation Dylan, go away! “Larry shouted. Sophia grabbed his hand and pulled him outside the room.

“We’ll just take Lucas and leave, “Diana said as she carried Lucas from me. She and Tyler both walked out of the room with baby Lucas.

My mother hugged me and whispered some words to me. “Be strong baby” she said some words I couldn’t hear to? Dylan as she walked out.

“Hey,” he said as he walked in.

“Hey” I replied. We both stared at each other for few seconds before we decided to break the silence.

“I… “We both said at the same time.

I laughed and asked him to talk first.

“I’m sorry” he started and then continued. “I’ve hurt you a lot. I had no idea that you were forced to leave me years ago Amelia. I didn’t know until… “I didn’t let him finished his word as I cut him off.

“Until your mother told you the truth right? “I scoffed. “If you hadn’t found out the real truth I know you won’t be here Dylan”

“Don’t say that Amelia, you know that’s not the truth”

“It’s the truth. Remember what you said in your interview about me being a nobody?. “I asked him and he looked away in shame like I have said something bad while clearly, he was the one at fault.

“Amelia “He knelt beside my bed and grabbed my hand. “I’m sorry about all the pain I’ve caused you and I’m also sorry for calling you a nobody in that interview. I was being manipulated.

I cried at his confession, it wasn’t his fault but he had resented me for years because he thought that I left him. “Dylan I’ve forgiven you and I’m sorry for not telling you about the baby.”

“I’m sorry Amelia, I resented you for years because I thought you left me.. and our baby, that’s was his/her destiny. “He sobbed. I watched him and was surprised to see a full-grown man crying like a baby. It’s not like I? haven’t witnessed it before but I have never seen Dylan crying like this before even when we broke up years ago.?

“I should have asked you, Amelia, I should have searched for you but I didn’t and I’m sorry. All those years Amelia I never stopped loving you.”

I cried as I heard him confessed his love to me. I love him too but we needed to be apart to get ourselves together.

“Dylan, a lot had happened, and getting back together would take time. I just lost my baby and you just found out about what happened years ago. It is a lot to take in. If fate permits us to be together then that’s it but if it doesn’t then I guess we’re never really met to be. What about Anna?? She was caught up in this too.”

Dylan wept beside him, I pat him on the back to console him. I was hurting just as much as he was hurting.

“I’ll wait for you Amelia even if it takes years” he stated, I tried to object but he grabbed my hand and continue talking. “I love you and I’m willing to wait for you until you figure yourself out. And Anna, she had moved on.”

I couldn’t say anything after that and when he kissed me on the lips, I knew it was a goodbye kiss for now. We had to find ourselves and I don’t know how long it was going to take for me to heal but I’ll hope one day Dylan and I would be together.

“I’ll be waiting” his voice kept resounding in my head even after he had left.
