Tombstone
In her room, Fahira gently and patiently tried to reason with Ariel, who was caught up in emotions. Truthfully, Fahira felt disappointed with her family’s reception, which seemed unwelcoming to her and Ariel. Moreover, Fahira noticed that everything in the house had changed. Not a single trace of their presence remained. Everything felt unfamiliar.
“Didn’t I tell you, Ariel? You shouldn’t cause trouble here. Our purpose in coming back is just to visit Father and Mother’s graves, right?” Fahira said softly as she looked into Ariel’s eyes.
“But sis, this is our home, so it’s only natural that we reclaim our rights!” Ariel insisted, his jaw clenched, remembering the disdainful looks from Arya. Now, everything was entirely owned by Arya, and Ariel had to live in a small, simple apartment. Fahira smiled and gently placed her hand on Ariel’s back, which was resting on her lap. She lifted it and held it tightly.
“Let go of it all, dear. For me, you are the most precious treasure in my life. So, continue to be my sweet little brother. I promise that after we return to Jakarta, I’ll buy you anything you want,” Fahira said, causing Ariel’s eyes to well up with tears. What his sister said was true. What use was great wealth if his life was never peaceful? Despite the challenges of living in Jakarta, Ariel felt comfortable during the three years he spent with Fahira.
“I’m sorry, sis. I promise I’ll always follow your wishes. I don’t want anything now. Just having you by my side is enough,” Ariel replied and hugged Fahira tightly, tears streaming down his face.
After taking a shower and changing clothes, Ariel felt more at ease. There was no longer a heavy burden on his heart, as it had been when he first stepped into the luxurious house. Fahira was also ready in casual attire when Ariel emerged from the bathroom. They both got ready and then left the room.
In the living room, Darian was already dressed neatly. He was chatting with Bisma and Arini, who seemed to idolize the man with the brown eyes.
“Uncle is so handsome. Arini wants to have a boyfriend like Uncle Darian when she grows up!” Arini praised in a typical spoiled tone of a teenager.
“Focus on studying first, and then think about having a boyfriend!” Darian chuckled. Arini reminded him of his cousin Rania. Since their first meeting at the Muay Thai studio, Nadya had often come to her house. Her presence made Darian happy as his mother now spent more time at home with the teenager. His relationship with Gavin was also gradually improving, although he still acted cold and indifferent at times.
Seeing Fahira and Ariel coming out of the room, Darian got up from his seat and said goodbye to Bisma. Meanwhile, David was waiting outside, observing his surroundings, particularly Rahmat, who was cutting the grass.Material © NôvelDrama.Org.
“Let me drive, Uncle,” Bisma offered with a smile, showing his car keys to Fahira.
“Arini will come along, Dad!” Arini chimed in, which was immediately agreed to by Bisma.
And so, the six of them set off in two cars. Throughout the journey, Fahira, who was sitting next to Darian, looked restless. “Relax, honey!” Darian whispered, putting his arm around Fahira’s shoulders. Repeatedly, Darian tried to swallow his saliva as he imagined Fahira’s reaction when they arrived at the cemetery.
After about 15 minutes, they arrived at Fahira’s family private cemetery. With her heart pounding, Fahira got out of the car and glanced at Darian for a moment before taking a step forward. It was not the first time she had come to this private cemetery belonging to her extended family. In the past, her father, Pramudya, used to take them to visit her grandparents’ graves every month. However, this time was different; she came to pay her respects to her father and mother.
They were greeted by a tall white gate that allowed them to see several graves adorned with flowers from afar. The cemetery looked clean and well-maintained. During his lifetime, Pramudya had assigned one of the residents living around the cemetery to clean it every day.
“Miss Fahira! Mr. Ariel!” The cemetery caretaker greeted them with a surprised expression. Both his hands went up to rub his eyes, as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He had to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.
“I must be hallucinating!” he said again, looking at Fahira and Ariel alternately, then shifting his gaze to Bisma and Arini, scratching the back of his head in confusion and fear.
“Joni, quickly open the gate!” Bisma commanded, causing Joni to startle. With trembling hands, he opened the large gate and stared back at the two people who were still shocking him.
Tears began to flow from Fahira’s eyes as she saw her grandparents’ graves one by one. Her steps became hesitant as she approached the grave in the middle. A tombstone inscribed with “Pramudya Abdillah” alongside “Fatimah Zahrah” was clearly visible before her.
“Mother, Father!” Ariel cried out, immediately falling to his knees on his father’s tombstone, tears flowing freely.
Slowly, Fahira touched her mother’s tombstone with trembling hands. Darian placed his hand on Fahira’s shoulder, looking bewildered. He felt unable to bear witnessing all the sadness in his beloved’s heart. In a corner of his heart, he felt grateful for still having his own mother. Allah had granted him more time to fulfill his duties to the woman who had given birth to him in this world.
“Father, Mother, forgive Fahira for only being able to visit you here now!” Fahira whispered as she shifted to embrace her mother’s tombstone.
“My dear,” Darian murmured softly, gently rubbing Fahira’s shoulder. David, who stood beside Ariel, couldn’t hold back his emotions either. He held Ariel’s shoulder and said, “Ariel, you are a strong young man now. Your duty is to take care of your sister. You have to be strong!” Ariel raised his head to look at David and nodded.
Bisma and Arini, witnessing the emotional scene, could only remain silent with tears streaming down their faces. Especially Bisma, who felt incredibly guilty for easily believing that his two nieces were dead. He regretted not thoroughly investigating the car accident case involving his stepsister. Although they were stepsiblings, Pramudya had always treated him well, just like a blood sibling. They were half-siblings from their father’s side, but they had different mothers.
While Fahira was still holding Pramudya’s tombstone, she was startled by Ariel’s exclamation. “Sis, why is there a grave for both of us here!” Fahira shook her head in disbelief as she looked at Ariel. Her suspicions from this morning turned out to be true. They were considered to be gone.
“My love!” Darian embraced Fahira tightly as she approached the graves with tombstones inscribed with “Fahira Ramadhani” and “Nazriel Ramadhan,” while Ariel sat kneeling among the graves with a tombstone bearing his and Fahira’s names, a feeling he couldn’t quite understand overwhelming him. Suddenly, his heart raced irregularly, causing a sharp pain in his chest.
Thud… Ariel’s body suddenly collapsed, and David swiftly supported his head, narrowly avoiding hitting the tombstones.
“Brothers!” Fahira cried out, rushing to Ariel and hugging him.
“Brother, please get the medicine from my bag!” Fahira shouted, pointing to her bag, which Darian had brought.
“Here it is!” Darian quickly handed Fahira a capsule, which she immediately placed under Ariel’s tongue.
“Dear, wake up! You promised to always be with me!” Fahira murmured, still holding Ariel’s weak body.
“We should take him to the hospital!” Darian and Bisma said simultaneously.
“Wait!” Fahira interjected. She needed to wait a few minutes to observe the effects of the medication. Fortunately, she always remembered Dr. Gavin’s advice to carry Ariel’s heart medication with them wherever they went, just in case of emergencies. Although Ariel had been declared fully recovered, he still needed time to adjust to the device implanted in his heart. While waiting for Ariel to wake up, Fahira gently rubbed his palm and gazed at his pale face.
“Miss Fahira!” Shortly after, a weak whisper came from Ariel.
“I’m grateful!” Fahira murmured, hugging Ariel, who still had his eyes closed.
“We should head home for now. Ariel needs rest!” Fahira suggested. Bisma and David quickly helped lift Ariel into the car.
During the journey, Fahira immediately called Gavin to update him on Ariel’s condition. Hearing Fahira mention Gavin without the “doctor” title caused a tinge of jealousy to arise in Darian’s heart. He glanced at Fahira through the rearview mirror. David, noticing the change in Darian’s expression, spoke up after Fahira hung up the phone.
“Fahira, does Ariel often experience this?”
“After the surgery, Ariel no longer complained of chest pain. But Gavin did warn us that the device in Ariel’s heart is still in the adaptation phase,” Fahira explained, her gaze returning to Ariel’s face as she gently caressed his head.
“Shouldn’t we head straight to the hospital?” Darian responded with concern.
“No need, dear. He’ll be fine. Ariel just needs rest; he’s exhausted from the long journey last night,” Fahira said, relief evident in her voice.
As they arrived home, Ariel showed slight improvement; he could walk on his own, although still with assistance from David. Finally, Ariel agreed to rest, although his heart and mind were unsettled. Fahira and Darian only left the room after making sure Ariel was fast asleep.
In the living room, Fahira’s grandmother and other family members were already waiting for them. Though hesitant, Fahira eventually shared Ariel’s condition, starting from the diagnosis of his arrhythmia heart condition to the post-surgery recovery.
“Perhaps you should stay here. This is your home and…” Bisma began, a panicked look in his eyes, but he couldn’t finish his sentence.
“Perhaps you should all rest first. We can continue this discussion after lunch,” Maheswari intervened, getting up and heading to her room, followed by Ambar. Arya excused himself to leave with his school friends.
“Brother, I’ll head to my room now, okay?” Fahira told Darian.
“Rest well, I’ll wake you up for prayer,” Darian replied, accompanying Fahira to her room, while David went into his own room next to Darian’s. David had purposely asked to share a room with Darian to make it easier to talk privately if needed.
Darian laid down on the bed, trying to calm the throbbing pain and the ache in his head. He needed rest to relax his mind for a moment. However, before he could close his eyes, he was startled by David’s discovery of a CCTV camera in the corner of the room, specifically above the bathroom door. David skillfully disabled the CCTV to render it non-functional.
David raised a finger to his lips to signal Darian not to speak. He then proceeded to inspect every corner of the room. Moving swiftly, David checked each piece of furniture. Finally, his hand reached under the bed frame and found a small device. Darian was taken aback, unable to believe what he was witnessing – David had found a listening device.
“Here, we have to be cautious and careful about what we say, boss!” David said firmly, handing the listening device to Darian.
Still in shock, Darian began to contemplate. Could it be that the premeditated murder was carried out by someone close to Fahira? And what was the connection between her father and Fahira’s father?
