Obviously, Whitney was still oblivious to all of this and did not know that she was now known for being a walking jinx.
She was smirking to herself smugly, wondering just how Wilbur was getting taught a fine lesson right then.
Meanwhile, Wilbur was actually shaking his head at Steve before turning to Victor who lowered his head at once.
Wilbur said, "You did the right thing in the end, so they won't be firing you. However, you're still going to be punished. I hope you've learned your lesson."
"I will, Sir." Victor's expression was one of helplessness and regret.
He had failed to uphold his values as a government official, letting power get in the way of him acting justly. For that, he deserved to be punished.
Faron said, "Victor Myre, report to the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection tomorrow. Someone will handle you."
"Yes, sir. I'll be there on time for sure," Victor said, hanging his head.
Elsa looked at Steve with a chuckle. "You can show up at the Special Forces department on your own. Someone will take care of you, and I'd start praying for a clean record if I were you,"
Steve's heart practically fell into his stomach. What good could come out of a trip to the Special Forces Department?
Yet he had no choice now. Neither he nor his father was nearly as powerful as Elsa and Faron. In fact, they could hardly compare.
"Yes, ma'am. I'll head there right this second," Steve said, his expression creased in distress.
Elsa waved a hand, and Steve slumped off to the Special Forces department. Victor left silently as well, preparing himself to report to the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection early next morning.
The old woman and her family had long since fled the scene. They knew that there was no getting their way here, or they might actually end up in jail if they were to insist on kicking up a fuss. What they were most afraid of, however, was the confiscation of their pensions. That was truly ruthless.
Wilbur watched as they left and could not help but let out a sigh.
"What's the matter, big guy?" Faron asked.
Wilbur frowned. "If anyone else had been in my position today, they might have ended up in jail on top of having to pay for the extortion."
Elsa and Faron flushed awkwardly at the words.
It was true that there were too many bad eggs in the system, and there was not much the government could do about people like the old woman and her family.
Faron sighed. "I know we're not perfect just yet, but I'm sure that we'll get better as the law enforces itself in time." "I sure hope so," frowned Wilbur.
Just then, Elsa said, "Hey, since we're all out here, why don't we have a few drinks?"
"I just ate," said Wilbur.
Elsa was deaf to Wilbur's words, dragging him into the restaurant as she said, "Well, we're not eating here, we're drinking. Besides, you're more than capable of having another meal with that appetite of yours."
And so, Elsa, Wilbur, Faron, and Skyler entered the restaurant once again. They ordered some food and a few
bottles of liquor, planning to drink to their hearts' content.
Just then, over at the foot of a mountain in Eagle City. A car pulled up in front of a straw hut, slowing to a stop. Justin Yaegar emerged from the car, holding a bottle of fine liquor as he entered the hut.
In the hut sat an elder, who was in the middle of his meditation.
The elder looked to be in his seventies or eighties. He was a tall, wrinkled man with matted hair that looked like it had not been washed in decades.
Yet Justin, the son of Eagle City's top dog, seemed to treat this shabby-looking man with great respect.
He got down on his knees at once upon entering, setting the liquor down next to him as he bowed deeply to the elder. "Sir, I have a request to ask of you."
