Chapter 470
The call came from the hospital-Josh's condition had taken a turn for the worse, and he'd relapsed yet again. For the past couple of months, his health had been all over the place, with frequent episodes that felt like they could be his last. Everett didn't waste a second.
This time, the surgery dragged on longer than usual. Everett stood alone outside the operating room, his eyes fixed on the bright moon hanging in the night sky. The hallway was eerily quiet and chilly, and he found himself missing Selena more than ever. He remembered that time outside the OR when she sat silently beside him. She didn't need to say a word; just having her there was enough to calm his troubled mind.
As soon as he hung up, he jumped into his car and raced to the hospital.novelbin
He'd long realized that his need for Selena went beyond just physical attraction. Her mere presence could soothe his temper and ease his aggression, much like how a little girl once made him feel. He wasn't sure if it was because he hadn't found that girl, and over time, Selena had filled that void. But one thing was for sure he couldn't imagine letting Selena go. He wanted her by his side, always.
Everett pulled out his phone, the screen glowing softly in the dim light. Earlier, around 8 pm, he'd sent Selena a message saying he had an urgent matter and wouldn't be home for dinner but would make it up to her the next day. She'd read it but hadn't replied. Probably ticked off about him canceling plans yet again, he thought.
He wanted to explain, but he couldn't burden her with the truth. She was pregnant and had been feeling off today. The last thing he wanted was to add to her worries about Grandpa. Dealing with that was his responsibility alone. He thought about calling her, just to hear her voice, but it was late, and he decided against it. He'd just have to make it up to her tomorrow.
Putting away his phone, Everett lit up a cigarette, the smoke curling lazily in the air. He spent most of the night waiting in the corridor until Josh was finally wheeled out of the OR, safe for now. A wave of relief washed over him, though he was surprised to see a different lead surgeon.
The surgeon, removing his mask, answered respectfully, "Mr. Everett, Dr. Campbell injured his hand, so I stepped in. But rest assured, I've been closely following Josh's case and am well-acquainted with his condition."
"Where's Dr. Campbell?" he asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
Everett nodded, satisfied for the
moment. Josh was taken back to his room, still unconscious and needing a few more hours of observation. The butler, being older, couldn't handle the long wait. Everett waved him off to get some rest, deciding he'd stay until Josh woke up.
At some point, night slipped into morning. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, Everett sipped his, coffee, savoring each drop as he watched the sun rise The warm light gradually spread across the land, bathing his cheeks ina gentle glow as he closed his
eyes to take it all in.
A thought crossed his mind, prompting him to grab his phone and call Alex. The line picked up quickly, "Mr. Everett."
"Hey, I'm not coming into the office today. After Josh wakes up, I'm heading straight to the villa. Handle things while I'm out," Everett instructed.
"Got it," Alex replied.
"Oh, and one more thing," Everett added. "My wife has a craving for those rice noodle rolls and dim sum from Baker's Corner. They sell out fast, so you need to get there early. Pick some up and drop them off at the villa-they're no good cold."
During her pregnancy with Mateo, Selena's food cravings had been off the charts. She'd wake up in the middle of the night with a sudden hankering for something specific, and if she didn't get it right away, there'd be no end to her fussing.
