Chapter 467 Jack Stayed Out All Night
Chapter 467 Jack Stayed Out All Night
"I'm leaving. Bye!" Rachel said with a smile as she walked past her colleague. Deep inside, she felt upset.
It was hard to hide the disappointment she was feeling.
'Jack couldn't keep his promise. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is he didn't have the decency to make a phone call or send a message!' she thought with indignation.
Julie had a light dinner since she wasn't very hungry. While she was cleaning the table, she heard the sound of the door being open. Taking off her gloves, she walked out of the kitchen to see who it was. Surprisingly, it was Rachel but Jack wasn't by her side. "Miss, where is Mr. Fu? Why isn't he with you?" she asked, a bit worried.
Ever since Jack moved back, they came home together. It was a rare sight to see Rachel alone. He was very careful since she was pregnant.
Her fear intensified when she realized Rachel wasn't giving her an answer.
Dropping the bag on the sofa, Rachel said in a drained voice, "Julie, is there anything to eat in the fridge?" "Yes. Why haven't you had dinner yet?" Julie asked. Once again, Rachel replied her with silence. Feeling defeated, Julie realized it wasn't right to prob.
Rachel entered the kitchen and said, "I'm starving. I better cook some noodles."
"Let me do it. You should be taking rest," Julie offered. She didn't like to make Rachel work. Julie reached out to pick the egg basket that Rachel was carrying. However, Rachel wouldn't let go of it. Smiling weakly, she said, "No, thanks. I want to cook for myself."
Today had been a hard day. She wanted to something that would keep her from thinking about Jack. Moreover, cooking always helped her get rid of negative thoughts.
As soon as she came in today, her eyes fell on the hallway. She looked for some proof that would prove Jack had been back. But she was disappointed to find none.
Now, she busied herself in the act of cooking. Once it was ready, she realized she had no appetite. But reminding herself about the baby in her belly, she forced herself to have a few mouthfuls. Then, she went back to her room and decided to clean up. 'Anything that will keep me off from thinking about him, ' she thought.
In spite of herself, she found herself waiting for his arrival.
It was midnight and her eyelids began to droop. Unable to stay awake any longer, she gave up and fell asleep.
The next morning when Rachel settled down for breakfast, Julie brought her poached eggs and placed it on the table. "Miss, Mr. Fu didn't return home last night," Julie announced. "Is he away due to some business related matter?"
"What? Didn't he come home last night?" Rachel asked, unable to hide the shock on her face. Her appetite was once again lost.
Rachel had waited for Jack last night. Since she had slept late, she had also woken up late today. In spite of yesterday's sadness, she had gotten ready to do some work. In her mind, she had discarded all thoughts related to him. She was determined to work properly.
But now, when Julie mentioned him and the fact he hadn't returned, all the worries came rushing back. Realizing Julie was expecting an answer, she said, "I don't know. Maybe he is too busy with business."
Soon, Rachel was in the hospital. Sitting on the chair with her chin resting on her hands, she was once again consumed by thoughts. Her eyes were glued to her phone, like she was expecting it to
ring any moment.
Rachel knew she would lose her mind if she continued to do it. Deep in her heart, she wanted to dial his number. She wanted to ask him where he was and how he could let her down like this. But at the same time, another thought worried her. 'What if some strange woman answers the phone?' she thought. She knew if something of that sort happened, she would be broken beyond repair.
While she was debating what to do, someone came in, pushing the door open. Yet Rachel was oblivious to their arrival. Seeing that Rachel wasn't doing any work, the director of the executive department coughed and said, "Is this what you do during working hours?"
Hearing that, Rachel came back to her senses. She pretended to be very busy and started flipping through the documents on the table. "Director, what can I do for you?" she asked.
"I've been looking for you since a very long time. In fact, I have sent you several messages. But you didn't respond to any of them! May I know why? I realize I have to meet you in person if I want something. Seems like you are a big shot now." The director's taunt-filled lecture left her a little scared.
Taking hold of the mouse, Rachel scrolled through the computer screen. She stared at the social software and noticed the director had indeed sent her more than a dozen messages. Unfortunately, Jack's absence had occupied her. She wasn't in the right state of mind.
She forced a smile but her heart was thudding against her chest. "My Internet is weak so I received them just now. Director, what can I do for you?" "Here it is." The director threw the key on the desk. "I have something important to deal with. There is a meeting in the hospital after an hour. You have to attend it on my behalf." You can find a document on my desk. Take it with you. The file is placed beside the land phone. When you are at the meeting, hand it over to the executive." Her tone reeked of rudeness, but Rachel didn't mind.
"Okay, the job will be done," Rachel replied obediently. She placed the key carefully in the drawer. Once the director left her office, she let out a sigh of relief. But once again, her attention was diverted back to Jack. Not wanting to waste more time in thoughts, she dialed his number.
The phone started ringing! It turned out it wasn't switched off anymore. This knowledge brought some hope. She waited for a while, but no one answered the phone.
She breathed a sigh of relief. Since the phone was switched on, it meant that Jack was safe.
'Perhaps he is busy now and will call back soon, ' she thought to herself. But twenty minutes later, there was still no call. Disappointment washed over her. 'How could he be like that?' she thought angrily. A bitter smile appeared on Rachel's face. Slowly, she was starting to believe he didn't love her. Everything he did was just a pretense.
After spending a few minutes of silence, Rachel glanced at her watch. Standing up abruptly, she made her way to the director's office. She picked up the document and walked towards the meeting room.
Rachel had no idea what this meeting was about until she sat in the meeting room. She looked through the meeting agenda and learnt it had to do with hospital's anniversary.
James, who was about to take over the whole meeting, stood expressionless. Once everyone was seated, he said, "This anniversary ceremony isn't held just to publicize our hospital but also to hold an unveiling ceremony for the charity established by our hospital. So, we can't take any chance. There should be no mistake.
If that is clear, I hope it will be done with perfection." The man who was sitting on the right side of James immediately said, "Our public relations department has already selected the site and the layout of the site."
"Our publicity department is also preparing for some advertising activities at the scene," another man said.
Everyone began to talk about what they had done in their respective department. They spoke earnestly, hoping to get into the executive's his good books.
Rachel had never heard the director mention this before. Now that everyone had almost finished talking, it was her time to speak up. For a moment, everyone's eyes fell on her. Expectantly, they waited for her to show what her department had done. With all eyes on her, Rachel began to feel nervous. She opened the document she had picked from the director's desk. On the very first page, she found a guest list. Breathing a sigh of relief, she said, "The guest list has been prepared by our executive department."
"Have you brought it with you?" asked James. When she nodded her head, he commanded his assistant to pass him the list.
The assistant stood up from his chair and obliged to the command. Rachel closed the file and handed it him.
The assistant passed the document to James, and he began to read through it. Suddenly, his face contorted with anger. Throwing the document on the conference table, he glared at Rachel. "I said that this anniversary ceremony should not be taken lightly. The guest list is of utmost importance!" he said loudly, his voice echoing in the silent room. "But obviously, your department hasn't taken my words seriously. I believe everyone present has heard about the gossip related to the CEO of CX Group." Everyone nodded their head. Once again bringing his focus back to Rachel, he said, "If we invite him here, what will happen to the ceremony? Won't our reputation be tarnished?"
James was like an uncle to Rachel in private. He worked with caution and expected everyone else to do so. He couldn't tolerate mistakes and never shied away from insulting the ones who didn't work diligently. In spite of working here for years, she had never been humiliated like this before.
The director of the public relations department also took a part in the conversation and said, "Mr. Zhou clearly mentioned this person shouldn't attend the anniversary celebration of our hospital." He looked back at Rachel, and asked tauntingly, "Weren't you paying attention when he spoke last time? Or is this a deliberate mistake?"
Everyone looked at her, waiting for an answer. They wanted to know what excuse she would give for this grave mistake.
After a few seconds of silence, Rachel said, "Mr. Zhou, I'm here to attend this meeting on behalf of our director. Perhaps I took the wrong document from her desk. I'll talk to her once this meeting is over and bring you the new list."
Hearing this explanation, James' face softened a little. He realized Rachel wasn't at fault. Waving his hand, he said "I want your director to bring the document to my office by herself."
"Okay, I will convey your message," Rachel said while trying to relax herself.
She felt her face heat up from embarrassment. After a while, the meeting came to an end. She was desperately waiting for it to be over.
When Rachel returned to the executive department, she saw that the director was sitting in the office and relaxing. Rachel heard her hum a tune happily. It seemed like she had no job to do. Rachel walked forward with a frown and put the folded document in front of the director. With a serious look on her face, she said, "Director, this is the invitation list. The executive was disappointed with it."
"Disappointed? What's disappointing about it?" The director frowned.
Rachel explained everything that had happened in the meeting room. "The CX Group's CEO shouldn't be on the guest list. Now the executive wants you to prepare a new list and send it to his
office."
Rachel's tone was calm and polite but the director was annoyed nevertheless. She mistook it for mockery. In a cold tone, she said, "What do you mean by asking me to prepare a new one? Didn't I already hand over the job to you? You couldn't complete a simple task. And now, you have the audacity to put all the blame on me!" Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
