My Mirror Image by Maybe Not (Candice And Alex’s)

Chapter 0407

Chapter 0407

As the night crept in, the conference hall emptied out. Barox and Candice ascended the stairs in a quiet, almost eerie atmosphere, their footsteps echoing softly.

Walking alongside Candice, Barox remarked casually, "He seems cold, doesn't he?"

Candice glanced at him, asking, "Who?"

"I'm talking about Mr. Elysian. It feels like he's here just for you," Barox continued, his face showing a hint of boredom as he climbed the stairs with long strides.

"You're mistaken," Candice replied flatly.

Barox grunted, a tinge of regret in his tone as he remarked, "Well, then Yana's probably in for disappointment. She sent me some tips last night, eager for me to tell her how well they'd play out in real life."

Candice remained noncommittal.

Knowing Yana's playful nature, Candice wasn't surprised by her whims.

Shortly after, the two reached the top floor. Sawyer arrived with a few policemen with Alex being the last to arrive.

Candice and Barox stood together.

She gave Alex a passive glance before returning her attention to the computer.

They went to the top-floor surveillance room where they could examine all of the conference hall's video footage.

The staff retrieved the footage of the only camera still running on the day of the incident, fast- forwarding to the afternoon.

Things seemed normal until a group of men in work uniforms appeared near the staircase, one carrying a pile of wooden boards.

Candice's expression clouded as she noticed him. She remembered this man as the culprit who almost ran into her with the wooden board.

Aside from the man carrying the wood, there was another man who was holding a teapot, identical to the teapot that had triggered the incident the previous day.

Candice's gaze was fixed on his face.

Alex said in a hushed voice, "Pause here."

She looked at him and saw that his focus was fixed on the man with the teapot. Alex raised his eyes and looked at her as he felt her gaze.

"Can you pull up the footage from the entrance?" he asked.

After receiving police approval, the staff promptly retrieved the needed video, which showed the group entering the conference hall.

What startled them was another familiar face in the footage—Sonia. She nearly entered the venue with the gang but swiftly split from them as she entered.

Candice's expression darkened as she spoke directly to the staff, "Can we go back to the earlier footage and check other areas?"

Due to the conference hall's size, even though the surveillance camera had downtime in the afternoon, reviewing all the footage was time-consuming, particularly since they had to inspect each area individually.

Barox examined the surveillance footage. He gently clicked his tongue and suggested, "Let's begin with Candice's floor and the top floor. It'll be more efficient."

Following that, he fetched a chair from nearby and positioned it a bit farther from the computer. He signaled to Candice, saying, "Take a seat here. Don't strain yourself standing."

Candice was engrossed in the computer screen and didn't feel like moving.

Barox glanced at Alex, who had been observing Candice intently. He cleared his throat and added, "Don't push yourself. You shouldn't exhaust yourself, especially for the child's sake."

His comment startled Candice. Then, she heard a thud. Alex had dropped his phone on the table with a blank expression.

A chill flickered in his eyes as he taunted, "Ms. Renault, didn't you hear? You shouldn't wear yourself out for the sake of the child."

His words came out slowly, with each syllable icy and impactful, leaving a palpable chill in the air.

Candice turned to face Barox, unmoved. She moaned inwardly as she observed him firmly clutching onto the chair and furrowing his brow.

"Do you find this chair uncomfortable?" said Barox.

He even dramatically removed his jacket and laid it over the chair. This young man wasn't going to stop until she sat down.

Candice struggled to deal with the circumstances. She conceded and took a seat.

Barox nodded and refocused on the surveillance.

With his intervention, Candice's previous tension significantly eased.

However, just as she was about to relax, Barox interjected suspiciously, "Does that woman know those workers? She entered the venue with them just now."

At his words, Candice looked up.

The screen remained locked on the image of the third-floor staircase. Sonia was spotted standing next to one of the workers, and the two appeared to be conversing.

It had occurred in the morning. Candice checked the time; she would not have arrived by then.

She looked down and grinned cynically before casting a glance in Alex's direction.

It was clear to Candice that Sonia was behind the incident, and she wondered how much longer Alex could shield her.

As the surveillance footage concluded, Sonia concluded her phone call in the corridor, and the man delivering the wood arrived shortly after.

Then came the incident that day. Descending the stairs, Candice was nearly bumped into by the man carrying the wood and later had a teapot hurled at her. Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.

All signs pointed to Sonia.

With the situation clarified, the police made copies of the footage and obtained the workers' contact details from the staff.

Candice studied the surveillance image calmly before rising and approaching Barox, suggesting, "Let's head back to the hotel."

Barox simply nodded.

Sawyer interjected, "It's late. We should go back together."

Candice coldly declined, saying, "I'm fine."

She looked at Alex, and the scorn in her eyes was undeniable.

“Until the matter of Sonia causing someone to hurt me is handled, I don't think it's wise for me to have much interaction with Mr. Elysian. Otherwise, I may not be able to justify myself later," she declared firmly.

Considering Alex's unwavering protection of Sonia, the outcome of this incident seemed predetermined.

Unless Candice was hopelessly stupid, she should stay away from Alex.

No one could endure someone continuously shielding another who inflicted harm upon them. Nobody. Even the strongest defenses, after enduring repeated attacks, would eventually weaken. Candice's defenses weren't particularly strong, and she valued her life greatly.

She followed Barox out of the building directly.

It was late, around ten at night. The street remained illuminated, yet Candice felt a chill down her spine.

Barox glanced at her, whispering, "Are you feeling cold?"

Candice shook her head. The realization that someone had such ill intent toward her sent shivers down her spine. Whether it was the near collision or the teapot incident, Sonia meant serious harm.

Sawyer looked up and noticed Alex's demeanor, which had suddenly become frigid. He hesitated as he glanced at the surveillance footage. Truthfully, the discoveries made him uneasy.

Who would have guessed that Sonia, who appeared delicate, could be so ruthless? If she truly orchestrated those incidents, it meant she had serious intentions to get Candice killed.
