Chapter 4
What about her?
What did the eight years she had spent with Alex mean?
Candice waited patiently for his answer while her breathing calmed down significantly.
Alex used the same firm and composed tone when talking about Sonia to reply,” You know you are not my type.”
It was true.
Except for the early days when there were no women around Alex and the women ensued were worlds apart from her.
He liked an obedient woman, but not too obedient like Candice.
Candice’s eyes were hidden in the dark, concealing any emotions from him.
Her frosty voice said, “Are you staying tonight?”
Alex got up, grabbed his jacket and said, “No.”
Candice did not know whether Alex’s “no” meant that there was no chance between them, or simply literal.
On the next day of work, Sonia’s work station was transferred next to Candice and happened to be directly opposite the CEO’s office, where Alex could see her by just lifting his head.
Sonia greeted, “Good morning, Candice.”
Candice put her purse down. She saw the brazen delight in the girl’s eyes and said calmly, “You didn’t like the place I arranged for you yesterday? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sonia was stunned. She explained timidly, “I liked it, but Mr. Elysian wanted me to sit here, so could supervise my work.”
She blushed at the end of her sentence but quickly realized that Candice was still looking at her, which made her uneasy.
Candice felt like she was the Evil Queen bullying Snow White.
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Continue what you’re doing.”
The news of Sonia moving to a new seat spread like wildfire within the company.

When Candice went down to give assignments, she overheard some gossip.
Those tale–tellers noticed her and immediately switched to silent communication through their suspicious gazes.
Candice was not overly bothered. She grabbed her stuff and left.
She was heading to Alex’s office to remind him about a meeting with a client later.
When the elevator door opened, she saw Alex and Sonia inside.
They were slightly startled when they saw Candice.
Alex then said, “I’m going to meet Mr. Cobalt.”
Candice nodded. “I’ll get the car ready.”
“It’s fine.” Alex stopped her by raising his hand and then looked at Sonia.
“Sonia can come with me.”
Candice’s breath skipped before she nodded calmly. “The board meeting is at three in the afternoon.”
Alex and Sonia then left the office.
Later in the afternoon, minutes before the board meeting, Alex was still nowhere to be found.
Candice had to step up to manage the board members‘ impatience before she went out of the meeting room to call Alex.
It took a while for the call to get through.
Just when Candice wanted to ask when Alex would be back, she heard Sonia’s meek voice uttering, “Candice? What is it?”
Candice was silent for a moment. “Where’s Alex?”
“He went to get some medicine for me.” Sonia sounded guilty. “I accidentally sprained my ankle and Mr. Elysian brought me to the hospital.”
“Is it serious?” Candice stared at the trees outside the window, asking out of
concern.
“Mr. Elysian said it’s serious.”
Sonia was still young and the youthful voice was pleasing to the ears. No one could be mad at her after listening to her mellow voice. Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
‘No wonder Alex liked the girl,‘ Candice thought.

She said, “Tell him the board meeting is starting soon.”
Then, a man’s voice took over the call. “Delay the board meeting. Tell them I have something urgent going on.”
Candice stood in the corridor with her phone after Alex had hung up on her.
It was not until the other assistant came from the meeting room for her that she collected her thoughts and rubbed her swelling temples.
She returned to the meeting room to deal with the board members. It was a tall task to handle their impatience but she managed to send them off.
Before she could catch a breather or a cup of water, she received a call from Alex’s mother.
Helen Elysian asked Candice to drop by their house.
