Aiden's parents were taken aback by my question, then looked at me with a mix of confusion and fear. "Who are you?"

It seemed they didn't recognize me, though I was sure we had met before.

Maybe their memory was fading because of their age.

"I'm... a friend of Aiden's," I lied, fearing that revealing my true identity would prevent me from seeing the child. "I heard he had a child and just wanted to come by and see how you all were doing."

The couple exchanged wary glances, clearly skeptical and uneasy about this unexpected visitor. "We don't know you, and Aiden hasn't mentioned having a friend like you," they replied, their guard up. It was good they were cautious; after all, you can never be too careful these days with all the scams around.

I offered a small, reassuring smile, trying to hand them the gifts I'd brought. "It's alright, I just came to see how you were. No other reason." They refused to take anything from me. "We don't know you and aren't comfortable accepting this."

After saying that, they turned to leave.

I just stood there, letting them go, not wanting to freak them out more by tagging along.

But where was the child?

Was he left at home under a nanny's care?

Curious yet cautious, I decided against barging in and instead went to the property management office to leave the gifts there, asking them to pass it on and inquiring about the child.

"The child is doing well. His grandparents take him out to the playground every day, just over there," the property manager pointed towards the communal play area, adding, "I heard the child caught a cold and they've even hired a pediatrician to look after him at home. They treat that child like a precious gem."

Following his direction, I saw a middle-aged lady pushing a stroller.

"Though you say you're a friend of their son, they're very sensitive about mentioning him. It's better you take these back; they've refused gifts from his friends before," the manager informed me, a bit surprised by the grandparents' firm stance.

Respecting their wishes, I didn't insist on leaving the gifts but didn't take them back either, choosing to leave them with the office.

I went to the playground and saw

Aiden's child, just as chubby and adorable as described, with sparkling eyes and a heart-melting smile. The child even smiled at me, which was irresistibly cute Content belongs to NovelDrama.Org

"Hello there," I greeted.

"Felicia?!"

Hearing my name, I looked up to recognize the person in front of me - someone familiar from my to Fanny a colleague at the clinic where we both worked. It was Winifred, who had left her job for

"You're working as a home pediatrician now?"

"Yeah, after quitting, I didn't find much out there, so I started a private practice..." Winifred shared, just as the baby in the stroller started to fuss.

Winifred picked up the child, trying

to soothe him, but he seemed to take a liking to me, reaching out. "Do you want me to hold him?" I offered, and Winifred passed the baby into my arms. Content belongs to NovelDrama.Org

The baby's tiny hands touched my face, pulled at my mouth, and snuggled against my neck...

That soft touch melted my heart instantly, and I couldn't resist kissing his little cheek.

"This child, poor thing, has never been held by his mother," Winifred sighed, adding a layer of sadness to the moment.

Hearing this, my heart went out to the child even more. He was just too cute and cuddly, making it impossible not to adore him.

Winifred had to leave, summoned by Aiden's parents who, over the phone, insisted she bring the child back immediately to avoid strangers.

I knew they meant me. Winifred guessed as much too and after a few words with me, she left with the child.

But I stayed, watching them go, captivated by the soft, comforting bundle that had briefly been in my arms, soothing my soul.
