Chapter 3
The atmosphere suddenly tenses up, and whispers erupt in the office, and she sighs as she touches her forehead. What in the crazy world is going on right now? They’re distracting her attention, and she may lose it anytime soon if they don’t behave themselves.
She raises her head to check out where exactly the sounds are coming from, but she shakes her head unbelievably when she sees her female colleagues adjusting their clothes. ‘I hope they’re not doing this because of the new so-called CEO. Oh, God! Can the time be fast-forwarded so I can leave this damn place and go home?’ She mutters to herself, reclining on the chair.
“Can you all please focus, huh? I’m doing some work here, and for the love of God, you’re damn disturbing me,” She slams her hands on the desk frustratingly, closing her eyes. Can this day be any good? First, it was that idiot from the traffic jam, and now her annoying colleagues wouldn’t stop frustrating her. Today isn’t a good day, honestly.
Someone nudges her arm, and she snaps her eyes open to yell at whoever it is to leave her the hell alone, but she comports herself when she sees that the person is Mr. Liam. She sighs in relief, taking a deep breath. Finally, someone is here to put these people in their place.
“Oh, it’s a good thing you’re here, Mr. Liam. Can you please tell these silly workers of yours to focus on their work and stop fooling around, huh?” She snaps angrily, turning to face him.
“Eve!” Mr. Liam calls her sternly and tilts his head to his right-hand side, giving her a signal that someone is here with him.
She snaps her head to look in that direction, and a thin line appears between her eyebrows and eyelashes as she creases her eyebrows.Text © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.
“Isn’t that the bastard from earlier?” She mutters to herself, still trying to recall.
“Yes, he’s the one,” He further says.
“Where are your manners, Eve? Stand up,” Mr. Liam quickly corrects her, and she stands up to her feet.
“Have we met before?” He asks her calmly.
“No, we haven’t,” she replies to him like the gentle lady she’s not. As much as she’s pissed at him for doing that shit earlier, she can’t bring herself to insult her new boss. If it were to be someone else, maybe the case would’ve been different now. He stares at her for a few seconds with that expression on his face that shows that he doesn’t believe her a bit. How is he supposed to believe her when it’s obvious that she’s lying? If only she knows how much he hates lies and liars, she wouldn’t have done what she did now, telling him the slightest lies would’ve been the last thing she would do.
“Hello, meet the new CEO, Mr. Jayden Turner. He’ll be taking over the company from his dad, and henceforth, will be our CEO,” Mr. Liam finally introduce him to the workers, and Evelyn’s eyes almost fall out of their sockets unbelievably as he stares at the man standing before her with her mouth open in shock. She never thought that the bastard that pissed her off earlier would turn out to be her boss. This is crazy. Is she not in trouble like this?
“You’re welcome, Sir,” Seeing the excitement on the workers’ faces when Evelyn looks around, especially her female colleagues who keep throwing glances at Jayden and blushing hard, she can’t help but shake her head. They’re all raving mad.
“A lot of things are messed up here, so I’m going to start all over again and set up the company the way I want it to be,” He utters in a calm, but cold voice. Normally, he was supposed to at least say a word of greetings to the staffs, but it seems like he doesn’t do that. Maybe he feels so pompous, or maybe he’s not just in the mood. Well, that’s his problem to deal with.
“A screening is going to be done on each staff, so I’ll know who’s worthy of staying here, and who’s not. I wouldn’t want to have many workers here that are not even worth being a cleaner here. Do you all get it?” He further says, and she scoffs silently, wondering why this young man is this arrogant. For real, his dad wouldn’t have employed them in the first place if they were not good at what they do, right? ‘For heaven’s sake, all the staff here were interviewed before they were employed, so what the hell is he saying now?’ She asks herself and sighs silently.
“Yes, Sir,” They reply to him.
“What’s your name?” He finally turns his attention to Evelyn after her colleagues are done introducing themselves.
“I’m Evelyn Jones. The head of the marketing department,” She replies to him politely, trying to be as courteous as she can.
“That’ll be all for today. Get to work, all of you. Evelyn, meet me in my office,” And with that, he turns around and ambles out with Mr. Liam…
Later in his office…
“I presume that you were taught at home that lying isn’t a good thing to do, and even if you were not, I guess it’s in the company’s rule and regulations not to tell lies,” He says calmly, not sparing her a glance. His attention is all on his desktop as his hands move the mouse slowly.
“Huh?” She bats her eyelashes confusingly.
“Don’t you think telling lies has so much negative effect on the company’s image?” He asks again, as he finally reclines on the chair, turning his attention to her, while she stares back blankly at him. Of course, she doesn’t seem to understand anything about what he’s saying.
“What do you…”
“You’re the one that insulted me this morning, why did you deny it?” He finally asks, and she grunts inwardly.
“What would you have me do, sir? It was your fault that you poked your nose into the business that was not meant to be yours, right?” Even if she wants to scream in his face, she can’t bring herself to do it, unless she wants to get herself screwed up. Like who the fuck wants to get fired? Definitely not her.
“Forgive me, Sir…”
“You should work on your character and manners, Eve. These ill manners won’t take you far. You may leave now,” As if nothing happened, he turns his attention to the desktop. This is the worst insult of her life so far. How dare he!
