Chapter 7
I was about to turn on the microphone.
Zayne suddenly yelled, “Enough! Can you just listen to me for a second?
“Because Eliza couldn’t reach me before, she kept calling our hospital’s emergency center. She never explained what the problem was and just demanded to talk to me. Everyone knows doctors are too busy to check their phones.
“I only heard about this from my colleagues after I got back to the department. I rushed home and talked to her, explaining why she shouldn’t call the emergency line like that. It could delay real people in need of help.
“She agreed on the surface but didn’t take it seriously. Whenever she couldn’t reach me, she’d immediately dial the call center. My colleagues can vouch for this.
“This time, I left the hospital to save someone’s life, and I never imagined this would happen. Because of what happened before, my colleagues thought she was joking again, so they didn’t take her call seriously.”
Zayne looked expectantly at the female colleague who had answered my call during the accident. Their eyes met briefly, as if they had an unspoken agreement.
She nodded slightly before turning to the reporters.
She said, “Yes, it’s true. She called several times before, and we were extremely busy. We were worried that her calls looking for Dr. Snow might delay actual emergencies, so this time we misunderstood the situation.”
They dismissed a human life so lightly and even blamed me for everything.
Without hesitation, I pressed the button to activate the microphone.
In the next second, my voice rang out loud and clear.
I said, “Everything they just said is a lie. I am the woman in that car crash, and I can prove that every word they say is false. The only reason Zayne wasn’t there during my accident was because he was with another woman. His colleagues were covering for him.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
“As for the supposed calls I made to the emergency center? That’s a complete fabrication. If anyone doubts me, I can pull the call records right now from the phone company. Those records can’t be faked, and they certainly can’t be erased.”
The moment those words left my mouth, Zayne’s face twisted in rage.
He never expected me to confront him publicly like this.
In the past, as long as it benefited his career, I would step back without question.
No matter how much pain I endured, a simple, half–hearted explanation from him was all it took for me to forgive and forget.
I would act as if it never happened.
On our wedding anniversary, he canceled last minute claiming he had surgery to perform. In fact, he was buying gifts for Jodie.
He missed my parents‘ funeral, saying the hospital had an urgent meeting, but he was off vacationing with her.
I was too afraid to lose what we had and let go of everything I had poured into this relationship. So, I kept giving in.
I cared about his reputation.
Now, looking back, maybe it was my seven years of unconditional surrender that slowly fed his desire to cheat.
For seven years, I never even once showed him a cold face.
All that pent–up resentment was now erupting, and the pain it brought could shatter me into a million pieces.
That pain was enough to burn them down to ashes.
I spoke with certainty.
Even without solid evidence, the reporters were already starting to side with me.
They were further convinced when they noticed my flat belly.
They looked at me with sympathy.
They understood what it meant for a mother to lose her husband and her unborn child in the same tragic accident.
They knew the weight of that loss.
None of them rushed up to me or asked any invasive questions.
Instead, all their attention shifted to Zayne, whose glare was now venomous.
He looked so cold, as if I were his enemy rather than his wife.
