Chapter 139
Chapter 139
Having detected his gaze, Bailey turned toward the stairs and saw Cadence staring at her.
Does he recognize me? He shouldn't be able to. I was wearing a mask when I came into contact with
him three years ago. I've never shown him my real face, so he shouldn't know what I look like.
With that in mind, Bailey flashed him a faint smile before retracting her gaze. “It's almost noon, Mrs.
Chivers. Let's go see what's available in the kitchen.”
Naturally, Gwendolyn wasn't about to say no to that. “Oh, yes! Eddy tells me your cooking is on par with
international chefs. Come on, let's go! I want you to teach me a thing or two!”
Bailey flashed Cadence another smile when she passed him by before entering the kitchen with
Gwendolyn.
That made him even more confused.
I definitely know this woman, but I just can't remember where I met her...
“Dr. White? Dr. White!” Yoel called out to him a few times, snapping him out of his train of thought.
“Huh? Oh, sorry, I was spacing out for a bit. What is it, Mr. Chivers?” Cadence asked.
Yoel led him toward the couch and stood in front of Glen as he said, “Father, we cannot delay the Belongs to © n0velDrama.Org.
treatment for your condition any longer. I've spoken to Mr. White about the treatment just now. He says
there is a ten to twenty percent chance of success, so how about you give it a shot? If you don't get the
surgery done soon, the cancer cells will spread to the other parts of your body. It'll be too late for
regrets, then.”
Glen waved at him with a stack of poker cards in hand. “I told you, I'm not getting treatment. Stop
forcing me, or I'll commit suicide!”
Yoel was about to say something in response, but Artemis stopped him. “Why don't you and Dr. White
go have a cup of coffee or something, Uncle Yoel? I'll talk to Granddad.”
“Sure thing. Father always listens to you, so you could help us talk some sense into him.”
Artemis nodded and told Glen, “Come on, Granddad. Let's go for a walk around the lake in our
backyard. There's something I need to talk to you about.”
“You'd better not try to talk me into getting surgery, you little sh*t! I'll whack you with my cane if you do!”
Glen shouted impatiently as he got up from the couch.
“All right,” Artemis replied with a helpless chuckle.
It was unclear what the two of them talked about in the backyard, but Glen agreed to let Cadence
perform surgery on him when they returned at two in the afternoon.
Everyone, including Bailey, was shocked when they heard that.
Bailey waited until no one was paying attention before dragging Edmund to the gazebo outside. “Are
you guys seriously going to let Cadence perform this craniotomy on Old Mr. Chivers?”
Edmund rubbed his forehead and sighed. “My father, Aunt Felicity, and even Artemis have all agreed to
it. He even managed to convince Grandpa, so what else can I do? I'm really worried, Bay. Cadence
says there's only a ten percent chance of success. There are simply far too many uncertainties
involved in this surgery. I fear that Grandpa may not survive it!”
Bailey was worried too as she knew Cadence's capabilities all too well.
Back then, Cataleya was regarded as the leading authority in neurosurgery. In order to boost his
medical skills, Cadence spent a few years trying to court her. However, Cataleya rejected his advances
as she had recognized Bailey's talent and wanted to pass all of her knowledge down to her. Although
Bailey never officially became her disciple, she did learn all of Cataleya's medical skills over the years.
Eventually, Cataleya got tired of Cadence's incessant pestering and decided to issue him a challenge.
She told him she would accept him as her disciple if he could defeat Bailey, at the time unnamed, but
he would have to leave her alone if he lost.
The rules of the competition had been simple. Cataleya chose two patients with end-stage brain cancer
and had them treat one each. The one who could prolong the patient's lifespan by three months would
be declared the winner. Bailey had been able to extend her patient's life by three months, but
Cadence's patient died on the operating table. That was how she ended up defeating Cadence while
remaining anonymous.
In other words, I was the reason Cadence failed to become Cataleya's disciple. While it wasn't exactly
a big deal, I did indirectly crush his dreams of learning from the best neurosurgeon. It has only been
three years, so I highly doubt that Cadence has made any significant progress in his medical skills.
Although the condition of that end-stage patient he treated was worse than Old Mr. Chivers', the fact
that he died on the operating table proves there is something wrong with Cadence's methods. Knowing
all that, I can't just sit by and watch as Cadence operates on Old Mr. Chivers! Mother and Granny
would probably roll over in their graves if I let that happen!
With that in mind, she grabbed hold of Edmund's arm and urged him anxiously, “Trust me, Edmund. I
have other ways of saving Old Mr. Chivers. Give me a week, and I'll find you someone who can truly
perform this surgery. She has at least a fifty percent chance of success.”
Fifty percent? That's quite a high chance!
Edmund's eyes lit up with joy when he heard that. “Do you happen to know Anonymous, Bay?”
Bailey pursed her lips and kept quiet for a while before saying, “Actually, I am Anonymous.”
Edmund's eyes went wide with shock and disbelief. “Y-You're really Anonymous?”
Seconds later, he let out a helpless chuckle as he continued, “I should've guessed! You're Snowflake,
so the possibility of you also being Anonymous isn't that far-fetched!
Bailey shook her head and said with a sigh, “The Anonymous today is different from the one back then.
I... I can barely even hold a scalpel anymore...”
After another long pause, she mustered up the courage and gave him a brief summary of the events
that occurred three years ago.
After he heard her story, Edmund's eyes filled with sympathy. “Bay, I...”
Bailey made a shushing motion at him and said, “When I found out about Old Mr. Chivers' special
relationship with my granny two days ago, I was determined to save him. That's why I left the Chivers
residence and headed over to Veronique's laboratory. However, when I walked up to the operating
table, I realized I had yet to recover from my trauma. My hands would tremble whenever I picked up the
scalpel.”
Edmund pursed his lips when he heard that. Having learned about her past, he didn't want to force her
into doing anything she wasn't comfortable with.
Even so, he couldn't just sit by and do nothing while Glen's life was at stake either.
“I'm sorry that the Chivers family has put you in a difficult spot, Bay.”
