Chapter 20

DANNY

Vaguely I am aware that I am not alone in bed. At first I remember last night and I am sure it is Courtney, but then I feel the skin next to mine. There is no way that Courtney is practically naked in bed with me. I blink open my eyes and see Kyle. He is still asleep. He looks so peaceful, at rest. I don’t know when he got here, but I am grateful that he was here for me.

I slip out of bed and start getting ready for the day. I grab some clothes and head to the shower. I am barely in the shower when the door pops open. Courtney runs to the toilet.

“Courtney, you need to see a doctor. When was the last time that you saw one?”

She catches her breath. “When I found out I was pregnant. They gave me some information, but that was it.”

“Well, you have me now. We are going to get on top of this. We need to start scheduling prenatal appointments. You also need to get a hold of some other people too. It’s going to be busy. I will help you out though.”

I hear her throw up again. “Alright. I’ll do whatever you say.”

“I heard crackers are great for morning sickness. I don’t know what else, but I will find out.”

“Do we have any crackers?”

“I’m not sure, but if we don’t, I’ll have Kyle go pick up some from the store. I’ll make some breakfast after the shower.”

I can hear her running the sink water. Probably trying to brush her teeth. “Ok. I’m going to rest a little bit more. Maybe I just moved too fast.”

“I’ll look it up.”

“Yeah, now you see it.”

We both laughed. I can hear her at the door. “She’s in the shower. You might have to wait a minute.”

I holler through. “It’s fine. I know he isn’t going to open the curtain. I won’t peek.”

Courtney laughs again. “I know you won’t, not so sure he won’t though.”

“Yeah, right.”

I can hear Kyle enter the bathroom. “I will do my best. I wouldn’t mind a peek, though.” I laugh. There is no way that Kyle is dying to take a peek at my naked body. Hell he has seen Courtney naked. I am sure I am not even close to that.

“Hey, can you check and see if there are crackers in the cupboard? If not, can you run and get some from the store? I have some money in my wallet, on my dresser.”

He’s still here. I can hear him. Even though I am rinsing my hair, my eyes are closed, but I can still hear around me. He’s quiet. He lets out a cough. “Um, yeah. I can do that.” Is it just me or does he sound strained.

“Are you coming down with a cold or something? Your voice sounds funny.”

“No, I’m good.”

“Ok, as long as you think so. Don’t over do it because you have a game today.”

“Speaking of. Are you still coming? I know you said you would yesterday, but you know.”

“Yeah, I’m coming for you. I am dragging Courtney too.”

“Awesome. I’ll make sure there are good seats for you two.”

I hear the lid close, the sink turn on and off and then the door opens. I let out a breath of relief. I didn’t know I was really anxious about him being here. I guess I am more conscious of Kyle than I thought. Now that I think about it. I was more upset about Kelly putting her hands on Kyle than I was Jordan sleeping with my sister. What is up with that? Maybe I just don’t like Kelly.
