Chapter 6 Gone too far
Two days later, after Amy and Darla finally traveled to London to spend some time with Mavis, they were all woken up by the sound of all the telephones at the Estate ringing violently.
Lisa got up and met with Mavis’s friends who were in the sitting room, looking disheveled and annoyed as they asked Mavis, ” what’s this all about now?”
The look that Mavis gave them when they all stopped ringing made them feel scared.
” Guys I’m so screwed.” She said as she placed both hands on her head.
” This Estate has been used as collateral for a loan with a shit-ton of money and I have only one month to pay for it.”
The silence that followed her announcement lasted for about a minute before they all panicked.
” We gotta sell the house!” Lisa said vehemently while Mavis shook her head. Amy and Darla just sat together on their couch as they watched Lisa and Mavis argue.
” What the hell is all this noise about?” Luke said as he came down the stairs. His hair was disheveled and he looked extremely annoyed. All it took was one look at Darla and he smiled.
” Darla, you came!” he said excitedly before he folded his arms and grinned from ear to ear.
Darla rolled her eyes before she focused on the matter on ground, ” Mavis, Lisa’s right. How the hell are you ever gonna pay £150000 in a month? Even if you asked Dave for the money, I’m sure as hell that he would give you but you have no idea the crazy things Dave would do to give you that money. Do you really want to abuse your power against him like that?”
Mavis shifted uncomfortably on the couch she sat on and ran her hands through her hair as she considered Darla’s words. It wouldn’t be fair to Dave if she asked him for the money, Darla was right. Dave might actually sell his property just to get her out of trouble. He was her long-time childhood friend who really likes her but he also always gave off the vibe of being obsessed with her.
” So what? You’re saying I should sell the house? If I do that then I will fail father.”
” But Dad wanted to be the one who restores the house to Glory, if he wanted us to do that instead of him I doubt that he’d leave you a property knowing full well that there’s so much debt under this property,” Lisa argued.
” I suspect Mom has a lot to do with this. I need to call dad’s lawyer.” Mavis said.
When she got off the phone with her father’s lawyer, she was fuming visibly. Luke on the other hand was so surprised by all that had happened but he was certain that he was in for more shocking Revelations since Mavis looked like she would soon explode.
” Mom is SO SELFISH! She set dad up!” Mavis erupted as she got up from the couch and paced up and down the house.
” What do you mean Mavis?” Luke asked.
” He said this Estate was originally for Dad but Mom bought it from him several years back and that was how they met. His family was furious at him for selling the Estate to a total stranger but he was vehement about it. After he and Mom got divorced, she suddenly gave the house back to him and the people who called this morning started calling him too about a loan. That was why he so desperately wanted to sell the Estate again.” Mavis said before she took a deep breath and covered her face with her palms.
” But he’s the same person who said we shouldn’t sell the house to Blaine?” Lisa asked.
” He said to Blaine, not anyone else,” Mavis explained.
” so much for restoring glory, mom scammed Dad big time and she keeps asking me what she did wrong?!”
” We should put up a sign outside so that we’ll get a buyer, also we should post on our social media accounts,” Darla said, giving Mavis a pitiful look because she knew that Mavis loved it here. She grew up here as a kid and this was when things used to be good for her and her parents. But life isn’t fair, there’s nothing Mavis can do about it now.
After two weeks of prospective buyers coming to check the estate, none of them were willing to pay the amount that Mavis wanted. She needed an amount that would cover all the debts owed and still be enough for them to start over in London or back in LA.
” I don’t know why they’re being so selfish. It seems they know this house comes with a lot of debt.” Luke said later that night after they had dinner and stood outside on the balcony.
” How would they?” Lisa asked.
” it’s London, gossip goes around faster than you’d think.” He responded simply. He might’ve not wanted to come here at first because unlike Mavis, he had more painful memories of his parents than the good memories but right now, as he stood and watched the beautiful scenery at the Estate, he loved it again. He wanted to make it a better place and make good memories there.
” Look sis, it’s obvious that there’s only one way to get us out of this problem.”
Mavis watched him carefully from where she sat on the floor. She wasn’t surprised that he was concerned about selling the Estate, he hated it here. He lost his life as a popular kid in London and got picked on because of their father, so naturally, he was very happy to start over in LA with her, he didn’t want to keep living in a place where he’d have to deal with jerks at school.
” What is this ‘only way’ you keep speaking of?” she asked, looking at him intently.
” We just have to call that Blaine guy, he has the money to buy the house and we’d still be left with enough to help us out with the rest of our lives.”
” Are you kidding?” Mavis asked, her voice almost getting higher as she spoke each word.
” No, I looked through some of dad’s files and saw that the reason dad so desperately wanted to buy the house was that Blaine was gonna pay £500000 for it! There’s no way he would say we shouldn’t sell it to him. I believe you read it wrong!”
” Oh did I? Go on, bring the documents and let’s see what dad really said!”Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
” Mavis, even if he didn’t say so-”
” – no, go and bring it and let’s see who’s reading what wrong. I know you want to do everything to leave here but at least have some respect for dad’s request. You didn’t respect him when he was alive and how you’re doing the same thing even he’s dead!”
” Mavis!” Lisa gasped and Mavis immediately felt remorseful knowing that she had gone too far.
