Chapter 54
Michelle stared at her best friend, waiting for her to say something but Katherine seemed confused as ever. "I....I...don't even know what to say because I don't know what to do."
"My life seems to be falling right before my eyes and it's unfortunate that I can't do anything about it."
"If only Beatrice hadn't invited him to the wedding."
"I don't think that's the point, babe. Your mom had no idea about Ollie being the father,"
"She even invited his father and not him, remember?"
"I feel this is just the time of truth. The truth is ready to reveal itself and I'm afraid we can't do anything to stop it."
"I want to ask you a question and I want you to be honest with me."
"Please don't," Kathie mumbled, massaging her temple. She has never lied to her best friend and She doesn't want to start now.
"Do you still feel anything for Oliver Gusto?"
"I told you not to ask me anything." She grumbled. It was as if she saw this question coming.
"We are both in some really deep shit honey so I would advise you to spill everything."
"Feel anything for him like how?"
"How old are you? Six?"
"I'm just trying to understand the context you're talking about."
"All context! Speak!! And remember to tell the truth!"
"I hate him so much. I always have."
"Why?"
"I don't know. We left on a wrong path and maybe I might have judged him a little but after hearing his side of the story, I got to know that I might have been brutal with judging him too quickly."
"The hatred reduced I think but it got worse again today with him being too demanding and wanting everything to go his way."
"But when we are together, there's always this...." Katherine sighed. "I honestly don't know how to explain it. I feel so ashamed even talking about it because I've never even felt that way with Lewis who I claim to love with my whole heart."
"I mean we almost fucked. He had smooched me, fingered me, and...." She sighed again. "I'm a psycho right? My life is just fucked up!"
"I think I know what the problem is. You're being too hard on yourself and I want you to stop it. You feel like you owe it to someone to live a perfect life and the truth is that life itself Is not perfect. No one has it all together so quit pressuring yourself."
"So you're saying I should marry Oliver?"
"No babe. Do you think I would want to lose you? Damn, Australia is so far. It would definitely take years for us to see again."
"Whatever decision you're taking, I just want it to be one that you're very happy with."
"I know. This is not what I planned. This is not what I envisioned my life to be."
"Life doesn't always go as planned. We just have to make the best out of it. You'll be fine babe and just know that I'll always be there for you. Whether you are here, or in Australia, or in any other place."
"I hope so." She whispered, staring at her best friend. She always had things figured out but right now, she was on the fence, confused as ever.
Just as She had promised earlier, Katherine was in the room with her kids, ready to read them a bedtime story and talk them to bed.
They all got on the Queen size bed. Sophie sat in the middle with her brothers on both sides. Katherine was seated on the bed, opposite them. She kept the bedtime story that was with her aside. "Before I start reading this, I would love to discuss something with you all."
"Okay," Sophie answered. If there was anything she was good at. She was really an obedient kid. While her brothers nodded, indicating that they were paying attention.
"Lewis and I are no longer together."
"Ahhh, Finally!" Sammie said with relief.
"I didn't like him," Sebastian mumbled.
"Did he hurt you?" Sophie asked, staring at her mother curiously.
"No. We just... Things were not working well between us again so we quit."
"You're not getting married to him." Sammie smiled.
Katherine shook her head. She couldn't believe a day would come when she would say this to her children. And the fact that such news made them happy, She didn't get offended by it.
"Are you sad about it?" Sebby asked.
"Not anymore. I guess he was not meant for me. You are glad about it, right?"
"Yes but I'm worried about you." He stared at her hand and noticed the ring was no longer there. Katherine noticed the gesture.
"You're fine, mommy?" Sammie said.
A small smile crept to Katherine's lips.
Remind me how old you all are?"
"Seven!" Sophie said proudly.
"We will soon be Eight." Sammie corrected.
"You all act like teenagers sometimes. Anyways, back to the main thing I wanted to say."
"Your hands are shaking," Sophie mumbled, taking a glance at her mother's hands, then back at her face.
"I'm fine." She said with a smile that didn't reach her face. "I just don't know how to start this conversation."
"Just say it. We will understand. You always make us understand."
Katherine sighed. Her eyes went from Sammie to Sophie, then Sebby.
"It's about your father." She said trying to maintain eye contact with the three of them.
"Daddy??!" Sophie smiled.
The boys looked indifferent.
"Yes, he's in town. You all are going to see him tomorrow."
"Really?!" Sophie's smile got even bigger.
Katherine nodded.
Before she could even blink her eyes, the little girl was by her side already. "Thank you, mommy. I love you. Thank you for making my dream come true."
Katherine smiled, returning her little girl's hug. "You're welcome."
"I wanna wear my pink dress tomorrow and the new shoe Aunt Michie bought for me."
"Just to see your Daddy?"
Sophie smiled, nodding her head.
"I want to look really pretty for him."
"Wow, looks like I've got some competition over here," Katherine said and they both chuckled. She was glad that her baby girl was happy about it at least.
"Can you read us our bedtime story now?" Sammie's voice came through, interrupting both mother and daughter's little moment.
"We are going to meet Daddy tomorrow. Are you not excited?" Sophie glared at her brother with folded arms.
"I don't want to meet him." He mumbled.
"Why?" Katherine found herself asking.
"Because I don't like him"
"You've not met him before. Why come to suck a conclusion?" Even though Katherine and Oliver were not on good terms, she made up her mind not to influence her children negatively about him. No matter what, She wanted them to at least be on civil terms with himTM
"I want to stay here tomorrow, I don't want to go anywhere." He mumbled, looking down at his hands."Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
"Sebby?!" Katherine called out to her other son who said nothing since the beginning of the conversation.
"Sammie fought Michael."
"He fought? Why? When was that? Why didn't anyone say anything to me?" Katherine asked, looking between her three children.
"Michael mocked me for not having a Dad because our Dad never showed up for our school presentations. Michael made me cry about this but Sammie fought on my behalf."
"Oh my..." Katherine facepalmed. "But why didn't you guys say anything to me?"
"Not really a fight. It was about to be but Mrs. Jules intervened and settled it and told Michael to apologize to us."
"I thought we promised to always tell each other everything?"
"I told Sammie not to say anything. We thought it will remind you that Daddy is not with us and it will make you sad." Sebby said.
Sophie stared cluelessly. It was obvious that she had no idea when this happened.
"No, I wouldn't be sad. And I'm so sorry Micheal did that to you. I'll talk to Mrs. Jules about it."
"She punished Micheal and warned him against such act. Micheal is now my friend but Sammie wouldn't even play with him despite apologizing."
Kathie sighed, knowing Sammie would probably never talk to that boy for life.
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that, honey." She leaned closer to Sebby, kissed his forehead, and did the same for Sammie.
"I don't want to see anyone tomorrow. I want to stay with aunt Michie and play with my new toys." Sammie mumbled.
"What about you, Sebby?"
He shrugged.
"We've had this conversation before, remember?. You told us You and Daddy lost contact."
Katherine nodded. She told them this a few weeks after they turned five.
"I lost hope about having a Dad after that."
"We lost contact before you were born. Before I even had any idea that I was pregnant with you all. But we recently reconciled, I told him about you
all and he wants to meet you guys."
Sebastian shrugged.
"You don't want to meet him?" Katherine asked.
"I want to meet my Daddy. I want him to read me bedtime stories too." Sophie chipped in.
"No. Not that I don't want to meet him. What will I say to him since he's a stranger. I don't know anything about him. I don't know if he will like me or
what to do when I finally meet him."
Katherine caressed his cheek,
looking into her son's eyes. "Your
father is not happy with the fact that he's just knowing about you all's existence. We can't erase the past so he's trying to make good use of the present. That's why he wants to see you and get to know you."
"You're a sweet boy, honey. What's there not to love about you? You don't have to be scared. He's your father, he won't hurt you."
"Just be yourself and you will see that everything is going to be fine."
Sebastian smiled. "Thank you, mommy. I can't wait to meet Daddy."
"Sam?" Katherine called her other son
"I'm feeling sleepy mama." He said with a sleepy voice, helping himself under the duvet.
"Come on, Sammie, Don't make mommy sad," Sophie said.
"Fine, I'll meet him too." He mumbled with his eyes closed.
Katherine went ahead and read them some bedtime stories after which she made conversations with them till they fell asleep.
She covered them gently with the duvet, kissed their foreheads, deemed the lights, and gently exited the room.
"Did you tell them? How did it go?" Michelle asked the moment Kathie stepped into the master bedroom. Michie was on the bed, in her nightie, and
with her phone which she placed on the bed the moment Kathie walked in.
"It went okay except for Sammie who didn't take the news well. He said he doesn't want to meet anyone."
"Why do I get a feeling that he got that stubbornness from his father?" Michie said with a small smile.
"Exactly! Hopefully, they will figure themselves out when they see."
"He actually had an encounter in school which they didn't tell me about. They were bullied by a boy about not having a father and I think that triggered
him. You know how Sammie is? He doesn't like to be made fun of."
Michelle nodded in agreement. "I'm so sorry they had to go through that."
"Yeah," Kathie said, sitting at the edge of the bed. "Their teacher settled it. heard the boy was punished and told to apologize. The rest are cool with him but Sammie wouldn't play with him and I don't
think that's ever going to change."
"I really want him to do away with that behavior. Holding grudges and all. I don't like it."
"I'm sure he will grow to have a softer heart. Just give him time."
"So it's settled? You're going back with the kids tomorrow."
"I honestly don't know. But now that I've told the kids about him, I guess it only makes sense for them to meet. I really hope it goes well and maybe he
will change his mind about us moving with him."
"He's gonna have to force you into that jet if that's gonna happen. Well, except you love him and you don't want to tell me." Michelle said with a small
smile, earning a glare from her best friend.
