Chapter 633
"Gilbert!" Caroline broke free from Charles' grip and dashed towards Gilbert, falling to her knees before him. Her brows furrowed deeply, her face pale as if drained of blood, "How are you? Where are you hurt?"
Just as she saw Gilbert moving his hand away from the back of his head, she grabbed it, "Let me see!"
To her horror, her eyes met with a shocking red.
"Did you hit your head?"
Without waiting for his answer, she turned to Charles, her voice sharp, "Get the car! We need to go to the hospital, now!"
Turning back, she supported Gilbert's arm, "Can you move? Can you stand?"
"I can."
With a bit of effort, Gilbert rose to his feet.
Allen and Abel also came over, both sporting injuries, but they could move fairly well.
Charles had already brought the car around, and Caroline, linking her arm with Gilbert's, urged, "Get in the car!"
"Alright."
As Gilbert bent to get into the car, he stopped Caroline from following, "Caroline, you don't need to come with me. I'm not going to the hospital." "What?" Caroline, taken aback, failed to grasp his meaning, "With injuries like these, you're not going to the hospital?"
Then it hit her; before the accident, he had mentioned something urgent he had to attend to.
Caroline stamped her foot anxiously, "Don't tell me you still have something you need to do!"
"Yes," Gilbert nodded affirmatively.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Glancing at Allen and Abel, who promptly got into the car, knowing they were to accompany Mr. Gilbert wherever he intended to go.
Gilbert then instructed Charles, "I'm pressed for time. Arrange another car to ensure Ms. Bet gets home safely."
"Rest assured, Mr. Gilbert."
"Gilbert!" Suddenly, Caroline clutched the car door, "No matter where you plan to go, you're not going! You must go to the hospital, right this instant!"
She stared at Gilbert, her eyes brimming with tears, her body trembling slightly, standing her ground.
Gilbert, short on time, glanced at Charles.
Understanding the cue, Charles pulled Caroline away.
"Let me go!" Caroline, forced to step back, struggled, but Charles wouldn't budge.
"Drive!"
All she could do was watch helplessly as the car drove off.
Only when the car had vanished did Charles release her, "Ms. Bet, I apologize for the offense."
"You!" Caroline glared at Charles with a mix of anger and frustration, "Tell me, where is he going?"
Charles shook his head, "Ms. Bet, it's better if you don't inquire."
"Don't inquire?"
Narrowing her eyes in speculation, Caroline guessed, "He wouldn't be going to see Sherilyn, would he?"
Charles remained silent.
That was it, then!
For Sherilyn, was he willing to risk his own life?
...
The clock on the wall slowly struck eleven.
Sherilyn couldn't help but frown, occasionally checking her phone only to find it as empty as before.
It seemed Gilbert wouldn't be coming tonight.
Sigh. Sherilyn couldn't help but sigh softly, hoping Jenna would have a peaceful night's sleep till morning.
Otherwise, the disappointment would be heart-wrenching.
Even so, waking up tomorrow morning would likely bring sorrow.
Sherilyn felt a bit resentful; Gilbert shouldn't have made promises to Jenna, knowing well how deepa child's disappointment can cut.
"Sherilyn? Sherilyn?"
"Hm?" Sherilyn snapped back to reality, hearing Rebecca calling her. "What's up?"
"Nothing much." Rebecca smiled, "You were thinking about Mr. Gilbert just now, weren't you?"
Sherilyn paused for a moment before shaking her head in denial, "It's not what you think."
Rebecca smiled softly, "So you're going to say it's because of Jenna, right?"
"Yes." Sherilyn handed her a handful of peeled pistachios.
Rebecca popped one into her mouth, continuing, "Regardless of the reason, you can't completely cut ties with him, can you?" Sherilyn stopped peeling for a moment, suddenly looking up.
"It's like your connection with the Johnson family. The Johnsons took you in and treated you kindly, but the
