Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change?

Chapter 996

Gilbert wheeled Sylvia from the patio into the living room, leaving Caroline outside alone.

"Grandma."

Gilbert fetched the medication, poured some water, and gently helped Sylvia take it.

"Feeling any better? I could call the doctor..."

"It's okay."

Sylvia waved him off, "Just a bit out of breath for a moment there. The meds will do their job. Calling the doctor would have him say the same. After all these years, I know what to expect."

"Alright." Gilbert pulled up a chair. "Then, I'll sit with you for a bit. Try to relax."

"Oh..."

Sylvia sighed and nodded, gesturing towards the direction of the patio.

"The thing is, Sherilyn was at fault back then. But I believe she didn't mean any harm. Sherilyn was just too young, and with her and Caroline not getting along, conflicts were bound to arise... But she's not a bad kid with a malicious heart. I've been friends with her grandma for ages, watched her grow up..."

"Grandma, you don't need to explain." Gilbert nodded. "I understand."

"Really?"

Sylvia paused, remembering his attitude wasn't quite the same back in the day, and then it dawned on her.

"You've changed. Back then, you put so much weight on your brother and Caroline..."

It took the old lady a while, but now she realized, this child was trying to repay a kindness.

She took his hand and patted it.

Then, she asked, "Your brother mentioned, you and Sherilyn, you're living together now?"

"Yes." Gilbert nodded.

"Oh..."

Sylvia sighed deeply. "You have to treat Sherilyn well. She's been through a lot..."

Her eyes started to water, her voice choked up.

"It's not been a day or two, but four years... This child..."

Something crossed her mind, and she grasped Gilbert firmly, "Do you remember? When Sherilyn first came back, I often said she seemed different?"

At the time, Gilbert didn't think much of it, but now it was crystal clear.

Not just grandma, but Yates Elliott and Derek Brooks said the same, even he himself felt that she had changed.

She'd become more reserved, more enduring.

"She didn't change."

Sylvia's eyes were moist, "She thought she was abandoned, didn't she? Could it be..."

The old lady suddenly gripped Gilbert, her voice filled with fear, "Sherilyn might think, not receiving living expenses was my doing? Huh?" "Grandma, no..."

Gilbert's brows furrowed tightly, shaking his head with difficulty.

"You've always been fond of Sherilyn, and she knows it."

"Does she?"

Sylvia was doubtful, "Such a fool... Not receiving money, why didn't she say anything for years?"

The old lady covered her face, sobbing in distress.novelbin

"Grandma."

Worried she couldn't take the strain,

Gilbert quickly comforted, "You're

too upset, your health is more

important. I'll take you back to your room to rest."

"...Okay."

The old lady nodded, too weak to resist, and let Gilbert help her back to her bedroom, supporting her to lie down.

"Gilbert."

Sylvia held onto him, pondering for a

moment before advising, "With

things turning out this way, call your

brother. He's the head of the family. Some decisions are not yours to make. Let him handle it."

"I understand. Grandma, please rest well."

Gilbert turned, closing the door behind him.

The moment the door shut, it felt as if a mountain had collapsed onto him, its weight pressing down, making it hard to breathe!

Not just that, but his heart felt as if it was being pricked by thousands of needles, throbbing incessantly.

A pain that seemed endless!
