Howling Hearts

Chapter 49

Lucian's eyes shot open at my question before they dropped and sadness engulfed them. I placed my hand over his and he looked me straight in the eyes.

Anger started to fill them paired with jealousy. "NO" He growled and I knew his wolf had started to front. I was well aware that this had to feel like a stab right in his heart, but I also knew that I could explain it to him. "Lucian. I'm not running away from you. I'm not leaving you. In fact, it's the total opposite," I said in the most honest and caring voice I could. "Then why do you want to see him."

His face turned to a totally disgusted face at the word "him" I giggled a little bit. I cupped his face and I just looked over his beautiful face.

Each little patch of skin that covered him was beautifully perfect. From his lips to his hazel eyes and even his furrowed brows that had seemed to be knitting the blanket of insecurity that would soon wrap itself around his beautiful brain. I knew that I had completely and entirely fallen in love with him.

His eyes were filled with worry and jealousy and I knew exactly how he felt. How I would've felt had the tables been reversed.

"So that we can move forward without him plaguing the past. So that that chapter of my life will forever be done. So that our future together can roam the rest of my life without a second of looking back." I could feel a tear rolling down my cheek. "But he already rejected you", I nodded at his reply. "I know Lucian but my wolf is insisting that we go and fix the past mistakes so that we can move on completely" I could see the wheels turning.

I know he wanted a great future together just like I do, but he was hesitant about having Asher anywhere near to me.

Which was understandable, especially with everything that had happened. Although just because he was bad doesn't mean that I should be too.

I wondered if he would be the same person if I hadn't made him my mate. What could his life have been like had I never been his mate? Lucian sighed heavily

"Fine". He said in a very irritable tone. I knew he didn't want to do this but I was thankful that he was willing to help me.

"Thank you" I straddled him whilst hugging him. It took him a few seconds before he hugged me tightly. I could tell that he didn't want to let go.

When the morning sun shined over my eyes, forcing them open through the sleep that glued them shut, I knew the start of the new day had approached. 1

Today would be the day of all corrections. Without it, I wouldn't be able to move on. Lucian came into the room holding two mugs of coffee.

I smiled to see his sweet gesture even though he executed it with a grumpy look on his face. He handed me mine and I took a large sip.

"We will be leaving in 30 minutes", he said before he took a sip of his own.

"Thank you Lucian", I said, placing my mug onto the bedside table. "I really appreciate it" He rolled his eyes

"the things I would do for you" He whispered under his breath. I just smiled widely, making myself seem innocent.

When we finished our coffee, we were both in a hurry to get ready. I could see Lucian tense up every minute that we got closer to seeing Asher.

When we got down to the car, he placed his hand on the car handle before he stopped and looked back towards me.

"Princess, are you sure you want to go see him?" I nodded my head without any hesitation. He sighed again and I could tell he

was nervous.

""He isn't in good shape"

"I know Lucian but I have to do this." 1

He nodded his head and he opened the door slowly and hesitantly. I knew he was far from happy, but this was for the best. My wolf kept telling me I had to fix the wrongs that I had done over and over again. So that was what I was going to do.

I slid into the car and Lucian closed the door. I felt him slide in next to me on the back seat not long after placing his hand on my knee. He gave my knee two squeezes, meaning love you.

I looked back up at him. "Love you too", I said with a loving voice, but I only received a sad fake smile in return.

The ride to my old pack was slow and quiet. When we pulled up to the pack house, it no longer seemed like home to me.

I felt that I didn't belong there because I didn't. Alpha Caleb and Luna Jade stood outside the doors ready to greet us. They were both sad and seemed like they had many sleepless nights.

Although Asher was no longer in line for the position of alpha, he was still their son. My heart ached at their desperate and depressed state.

"You ready?" Lucian whispered in my ear and I nodded. He got out of the car before he opened my door for me once more. I took a deep breath and stepped out. I made full eye contact with Jade. Her eyes told me a story. One of deep sadness and regret. But there was no anger or hate toward me just an apologetic look.

"Alpha Caleb. We want to see your son", Lucian said calmly and numbly.

Jade's eyes shot open and she fell onto her knees crying.

"Please, please don't kill him. He has been through enough. Please, Alpha Lucian, Please" She begged and pleaded at Lucian's feet. Alpha Caleb pulled her up. He held onto her while she cried into the crook of his neck.

He nodded and gestured for the guard to lead us to him. We followed the guard and I tried my best to ignore the weeping that was echoing through the back halls from Jade. Her cries were those of a broken woman, it bellowed. I started fiddling with my hands and Lucian grabbed onto them. I looked at him but he had just kept looking forward, putting on a strong face.

When we reached the door that was closed, the guard started moving back to where he had come from. I stood outside and took a few deep breaths, trying to prepare myself for what I might see.

Suddenly, the door opened, revealing a very unkempt Saige. She was dressed in grey pajamas that had a few stains all over.

Her hair was a total mess and I could see a few bald patches forming them. She had heavy dark circles that spoke stories of her sleepless nights and her cheeks were hollow.

Her blue eyes had turned a more fog-like color. When her eyes met mine, her face showed nothing but disgust.

"What are you doing here?" She spat at me.

"Just here to see Asher" I said, trying to end the conversation.

She tried to slap me but Lucian caught her hand.

"Don't forget" was all he had said. And she shivered at his words. She then glared back at me before storming off.

I then sighed and looked back at the ajar door, recalling the moment everything had started to go wrong. But instead of seeing and hearing the biggest betrayal of my life, I just heard a machine beep and no movement . I looked up at Lucian and took another deep breath. My nerves were killing me.

"I have to do this alone Lucian", his eyes shot down, showing me that that wouldn't happen.Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!

I cupped his face again and could see him calm down slightly. He sighed and gritted his teeth.

He gestured with his head for me to go, trying to keep his cool in the process. When our hands left each other, my heart yearned but my wolf kept telling me to go forward.

So I did.
