Chapter 487
She didn't feel the need to explain herself to him. It just wasn't worth the emotional energy.
"Mr. Everett, you're one to talk," she shot back, her lips curling into a sly smile. Over the past three years, he hadn't been twiddling his thumbs either. Without her, without Margot, a new flame had come into the picture and was clearly his favorite, making both her and Margot look like yesterday's news.
So, if she had started something, he had taken it to a whole new level. What gave him the right to be so confrontational now? Three years had passed, and she'd hoped he might have matured a bit, maybe picked up a bit of gentlemanly grace. But no, a jerk remains a jerk, no matter how much time passes!novelbin
Everett looked taken aback for a moment. It took him a second to catch on to who she was talking about. After all, she'd seen him with Yasmine in the hall.
Something flickered in his eyes as he stared at her, his gaze sharp and searching. He scrutinized her, as if trying to see right through her, before finally speaking. "Selena, Yasmine and I..."
But his words were cut off by the sudden ringtone of a phone.
Everett glanced down at the phone Selena was holding, its screen lit up with a glaring nickname: My Dearest Lovel.
He knew Selena had a thing for giving nicknames to people she cared about. She'd even given him a few, which he'd found way too sugary until she whispered them during their intimate moments, her cheeks flushed.
After their falling out, he hadn't heard those names again. Now, seeing this overly sweet nickname...
Everett's eyes turned cold, and he gripped Selena's wrist tightly, his tone sharp and demanding, "Is it Callum?"
"Selena, you never called me anything that sappy when we were married!"
Why would she use it for Callum? Did it mean she'd been with Callum these past three years?
Selena's wrist throbbed under his grip, and she frowned. Her "My Dearest Love" was obviously her son Mateo, not Dr. Campbell! But Mateo was a secret she had to protect at all costs. If Everett found out, he'd never let it go, and she'd lose her
son!
She tried to stay calm, not giving anything away, and replied coolly, "Mr. Everett, what I call someone is none of your business, right? I don't need your approval, do I?"
With that, she tried to pry his hand off, desperate to free herself from his grasp. Her resistance only seemed to fuel his anger further.
In the next moment, Everett snatched the phone from her hand, his dark eyes fixed on the screen, his fingers twitching slightly.
Selena's eyes widened, her breath
catching in her throat. The phone kept ringing; her heart pounding like a drum, cold sweat trickling down her back. She was terrified that he might answer and hear a child's
voice.
If he got suspicious... she couldn't risk that. If her uncle's checkup went smoothly, she'd soon be leaving, heading back to Germany to resume her peaceful, uneventful life away from him. During this time, any slip-up was something she couldn't afford.
"Everett, give me back my phone,"
she said, trying to keep her voice steady. She couldn't help but provoke him, "What? Have you become so twisted that you enjoy eavesdropping on me chatting with my beloved?"
