Chapter 46
Mayra followed Anderson to his study. The study had a retro ambiance and was decorated in dark hues. Her steps were muffled as she stepped on the wooden floor.
"Andy, what is it?" Mayra asked anxiously. She'd been to his study countless times in her previous life, so she knew the layout and the arrangement of his books precisely.
Anderson's study was important to him. He didn't even let Isabel enter. Yet, he made an exception for Mayra.
He strode over to his desk and sat down. Taking out a bunch of keys from his drawer, he placed it on his desk. "Arrange a time to move in. These are the keys to the mansion's entrance."
Mayra was flabbergasted. Staring at him with wide eyes, she was rendered speechless. Did he just ask her to move into the Barlow mansion?
She used to pester him to let her stay with him in her previous life, but he had allowed it. Thus, she couldn't fathom her current situation. She hadn't even done anything yet.
Mayra was well aware of the Barlows' shrewdness and how they oppressed Anderson. If it weren't for him, she wouldn't have survived a day with the Barlows. The Barlow family was nothing more than a nest of vipers.
All she wanted was to stay away from trouble. This time, she felt like refusing his offer. She wanted to try to live a life without him.
With her head hung low, she mumbled, "I'm sorry, Andy. I- I don't feel like moving in."Content rights by NôvelDr//ama.Org.
Anderson rose and approached her. He dropped his gaze, displeasure evident in his eyes. "What's your reason?"
"I'm already used to my current life."
He narrowed his eyes, his gaze darkening. "I want the truth. Mayra, don't lie to me. I don't like it."
He'd only become more upset if she told him something worse. The situation would take a turn for the worse then.
Mayra replied weakly, "I can't fit into your social circle. You're surrounded by big shots. But I just want to live a normal life. I don't want people to say that I'm climbing the social ladder.
"The money you give me is more than enough to cover my expenses. I'm really living my best life now. Andy, can I not move in?"
Anderson placed a hand on her head. "I don't have time to take care of you if you don't live here. You will get to enjoy a better life here. The driver can pick you up from school."
She fell silent. She could tell that he was unyielding. However, she knew more people would target her if she really moved in with him.
In just three years, he no longer feared the Barlows and the others. In fact, he had Belchester wrapped around his little finger.
The Barlow family's foundation
might have been established, but he
proved that he was the best option to take up his current position. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gained control of the Barlow family in just three years.
"I didn't bring you back sooner because I had concerns. Now, I'm capable of protecting you. You can ignore the rest, and I'm not going to force you either. Even Isabel can't do as she likes!"
His statement made Mayra's head jerk up. Her pupils were dilated as she blurted out, "Why? Don't you wish that I could be on good terms with her?"
Was he trying to be considerate of
her feelings? It made sense when he said she could ignore the Barlows since she didn't have to contact any of them. However, she was
bewildered by his remark regard Isabel.
Anderson and Isabel had been childhood sweethearts. He was completely smitten with her in his previous life.
Fearing that Mayra might hurt Isabel, he ordered bodyguards to protect Isabel at all times. This was a treatment that Mayra had never experienced before.
Now he spoke in a way that was as if there was some kind of discord between their relationship. Still, Mayra couldn't figure out what was wrong. What else had she overlooked?
She had already noticed his indifference toward Isabel when they returned from the amusement park. They no longer seemed as intimate as she had remembered.
