Chapter 460
If this had gotten out, who knew what kind of chaos it might have caused?
Ethan got up. "Ms. Langley, Evelyn and I are just business partners. Let's not say anything that might get twisted."
I wasn't sure why, but I felt disappointed when he said that. We were only business partners, after all.
Sasha seemed to pick up on the way Ethan was shutting her down without actually saying it. She smiled sheepishly. "Well, I guess I overstepped. I'll leave you to your meal." She waved and took her friends over to another table.
Things got awkward at our table.
"Sorry, I wasn't being thoughtful enough," Ethan whispered.
"It's fine. I didn't take it personally," I said with a forced smile. "Let's eat before everything gets cold."
I speared a bite of grilled salmon and popped it in my mouth. The salmon was so tender and juicy that it practically melted in my mouth.
Still, I couldn't taste a thing. My mind was stuck on Ethan's words, but I didn't let it show.
"Evelyn, w-what's wrong?" Ethan's voice, filled with concern, cut through.
That was when I realized tears had quietly run down my cheeks. I quickly wiped my tears away. "It's nothing. I probably just laughed too hard and choked. I'll go to the restroom."
I got up quickly and headed for the restroom. I needed to pull myself together. I couldn't lose it before him.
I stood in the restroom, looking at myself in the mirror, trying to steady my breathing. My eyes were slightly red, and traces of tears were still visible on my face.
How embarrassing. I, the director of Evelyn Studio, was in tears over some guy. I laughed dryly, realizing I was completely under Ethan's spell, in this life and the last.
I was deep in thought when thenovelbin
restroom door flew open. I turned to find Sasha leaning against the doorframe with a half-smile. "What's up, MS Wiley? Did you two argue? Hiding in here, crying your eyes out?"
Her words said more than what she let on.
"Ms. Langley, what exactly are you getting at?" I asked coldly.
"Nothing." She shrugged, approaching me gracefully. "Just a thought. I think it'd be better for you to move on from a guy like Mr. Grayson sooner rather than later."
My chest tightened. "What makes you say that?"
"You honestly believe he loves you, Ms. Wiley?" Sasha scoffed. "I heard that back when he was in Lendora, he chose an arranged marriage over you. He gave you up without batting an eye."
She leaned in, her voice dripping
with venom. "Oh, you don't honestly believe he's head over heels for you, huh? theard the woman he's been arranged to is a total knockout with a fortune.
"And you? You're just a fashion designer, nothing more. Sure, you might be successful in your field, but you don't even compare to those from true high society."
A wave of dizziness hit me. I grabbed the edge of the sink, my knuckles turning white. Sasha's words had cut deep, right to my weakest spot.
Why did Ethan give me up back then? He was meant to be with that beautiful, glamorous heiress from an influential family, wasn't he?
My throat tightened at the thought, but I couldn't show any weakness before Sasha. I was at the helm of Evelyn Studio and climbing the ranks in fashion. I had too much pride to stoop for any guy.
