Chapter 163
Alfred, too, had just heard about the incident from others. He immediately disregarded his ongoing tasks to rush over and check on Jessica.
"I'm fine," Jessica replied with a shake of her head. The sight of Alfred being in a disheveled state made her question him perplexedly, "What's the matter with you? Why do you look like you're in low spirits? Did you not get enough sleep?"
To Alfred, seeing Jessica being safe and sound was enough for him. With a shake of his head, he replied, "I'm fine."
With that, he walked inside and took a seat next to her.
Due to Trevor's exploitation, the Whiteburns' business had been struggling significantly over the past few days.
Alfred was never interested in such issues in the past. However, to become strong enough to have Jessica and to be on an equal footing with Trevor, he had been putting in a lot of effort. Despite that, he was still not worthy of being considered Trevor's rival. Without actually spending time in the business world, he would not have known how powerful Trevor was.
As a result, after some time in the business world, he finally understood how far Trevor was ahead of him.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
However, he would still try his best!
He wanted to show Trevor that he would use his capabilities to get Jessica fair and square.
Jessica lifted her gaze to Alfred. She knew he would not unexpectedly stop by to see how she was doing. "Did you also hear about the incident today?"
Alfred nodded and took the glass of water that Jessica gave him. "Yeah."
"Then do you know how Trevor is? Has he woken up?" Jessica asked, her words laced with noticeable anxiousness.
The Whiteburn family was also prominent in Horington. Thus, she reckoned that they would have sufficient inside information to know about Trevor's condition.
Alfred set the glass of water down as he heard the emotion in her voice. Immediately, he looked up to meet her gaze. He stared at her in disbelief, a glint of frustration in his eyes. "Are you worried about him?"
"No. It's not that. I just-" Jessica had subconsciously tried to explain. However, she immediately stopped.
"He had done so many horrid things to you, Jessica. And you're still worried about him?" Alfred snapped.
His tone was slightly more intense as he said that. The meaning behind his words could not be more obvious.
"Don't forget how he treated you. You've died so many times for him, Jessica. Did you happen to forget? If you did, would you want me to enlighten you?"
"That's enough!" Jessica interjected. Her eyebrows were tightly knitted together as she sank into the couch.
She placed both hands on her temples as she tried to make sense of the whirlwind of feelings within her. "That's not enough. How is it enough? You don't have to care about him no matter what happens, Jessica," Alfred reminded.
"But he was trying to save me this time," Jessica explained.
She let go of her temples and gradually looked up. She seemed to have found a reason for her behavior. "That's right. Trevor got hurt for saving me. I'm only worried because I want to repay his act," she thought.
"But how many damned times had he put your life in danger? Wasn't it his fault when your life was on the line during the five years you spent in the war-torn country? You don't ower him anything, Jessica. He's the one who owes you too damn much," Alfred argued.
His tone softened as he added, "You don't need to be concerned about him at all. Likewise, you are not required to communicate with him I'll bring you along once I've dealt with my family's issues. You must keep in mind that you are now Jessica Lockett and not Jessica Jackson. Bennett has been taken from you by him. Do you want him to take all of your children?"
The last part of Alfred's speech was what Jessica dreaded the most. Thus, after hearing that, her
feelings became even more unsettled.
"No. I won't let Trevor do so. The children belong to me. I won't allow anyone to take them away from me," she said.
There was tenderness in Alfred's
eyes as he stared intensely at the woman next to him. His tone was firm as he declared, "Then try your best to stay away from him. Don't worry, I'll do everything I can to keep him from finding you, just like I did three years ago."
Jessica said nothing in reply. She turned around and walked to the window.
Another negative thought crept into her mind. "Maybe everyone's lives would be better without me."
In the three years that Trevor had lived in Herington, nothing had ever happened to him. However, just a few days after Jessica's return, he was confronted with a life-threatening situation.
